Camshaft Seal Wisdom? 200

I'm looking for your wisdom on how to prep the outside edge.

I've come across three schools of thought. Dry, oil, and sealant.

I'll share my feelings on two of them. Oil, my help it seat squarely, which has been a problem in the past.

Sealant would lessen the chance of leaks, but may leave residue that may be difficult to clean out and get a good seal in the future.

Give me you opinions.

I install the outer edge dry (it's made for that) but fill the backside void with wheel bearing grease (to keep the spring contained--especially if I'm knocking the seal into place rather than using a press tool) and smear a bit onto the inner lip. It's most important to be sure the inner lip doesn't fold back when installed over the shaft end. Once engaged with the shaft I use a twisting motion while pushing the seal in against the outer edge (again, to make sure the lip doesn't fold back). - Dave

    Hi Bruce S,

I normally use a little engine oil on the inner lips and outside seal body during installation. Then wipe off any excess. The seal itself was made to withstand engine oil so why not? So far so good mine won't leak even up to 8-10 years later till next belt change. I won't use any RTV sealant on the outside of seal, like you've said it would harden and make it difficult during next installation. Better than any RTV is using non-hardening sealant like Hylomar blue which could easily be wiped off during next time. Unless you need to install PTFE oil seals on more modern engine, these must go in without any oil on them.

It might sound gross but I use spit. It helps slide the seal in and soon dries/cooks out, leaving rubber against metal which is about as good as you can do as far as forming a seal.

I totally agree with Chris Mullet. I wouldn't use oil. If you need a little lube to insert it ....I would use maybe a little WD-40 since it dries fairly fast and isn't good for much of anything but cleaning parts or greasy clothes. Just put a little WD-40 on your finger and run it once around the seal,
