What do people get for around town/highway gas mileage with the 940T?

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,
Ive got a 2.0L manual 940 turbo in the UK.

I reckon I get about 25mpg around town and probably low thirties on a run using miserable 5% unleaded fuel.

Fuel here is now £1.50 ish per litre. 4.55 litres to the gallon.

What a great car though it goes like stink so its worth it.

regards

Hi Piers,

I'm getting worse mileage here around town, and have the 2.3L turbo with auto tranny.
It also is a sleeper street car. I'm hoping new hubs will up the
MPG as it did in my old 850. Hubs crap out before making noise.

The fuel in the USA is polluted with 10% ethanol to make the giant corn corporations more wealthy, it's rubbish and we're stuck with it since lobbyists
control our government.

I would say that you're doing great with your mileage, and probably much safer in your brick than most cars.

Happy motoring, Bill

If you're looking for actual numbers you can compare too - I had a '92 940T w/auto on the road for a year or so - with local driving split with road trips of 100-350 miles. I saw around 22 mpg local -- 25-27 on the road. It was in great shape and got totaled, while parked, by a drunk driver. His insurance company eventually paid a fair price. - Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the input. I'm doing mostly around town driving with Covid, and getting 15-17 mpg, but it includes stuff like tranny flushing. There's no highway driving to get a better handle of the mileage.
I wish I had those MPG figures... How many miles were on your car?
I'm thinking I have toasted wheel bearings here... 212,000 miles with no grease job.

Cheers, Bill

Dear B.B.,

Hope you're well and stay so. The front wheel hubs - factory-lubricated - seem very robust: the bearing balls are about 3/8" in diameter. The bearings are not designed to be lubricated.

When a hub starts to fail, it usually makes noise. Use a jack to raise the wheel. Put a jack stand under the car's frame.

Then, use your hand to spin the tire. If the tire spins smoothly and quietly, the hub is in good order. If there's a low-pitch "rumble" or a "grinding" noise, the hub may need to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

My hubs (1991 945 as above) are original and never been greased - circa 300k miles.

Hi Bill.
I have a UK spec. 1991 945 with a B 200F non turbo and manual 5 speed box. Done circa 300k miles so far, mostly by me (owned since 1995).
I get 30mpg or so generally (British gallons and British miles of course!). On a long gentle run I can get 35+ mpg.
British gallons are 4.54 litres and I suspect British miles are the same as US ones.
We have just introduced E10 fuel for general use, but we also have E5 super grade which is around 98 octane and a good bit more expensive, around £1.66 per litre!!

It really varies depending on the kind of driving I've been doing. My 940T is considerably thirstier at the pump compared to it’s otherwise identically driven 940 NA cousin of same age and mileage, to the point I will avoid taking it on longer highway trips unless I’m hauling a load or will be climbing lots of long hills with the A/C on. On a good day on a long highway trip in slightly mountainous terrain I can do 700 km on a brimful tank of premium in the NA, whereas I can do maybe 550 km in the turbo (you can do the metric conversion). I admittedly do attempt more passing with the more powerful turbo. Somewhere between my neighbour’s Prius and other neighbour’s F150 is all I can ask of it.

Ideally it’s www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/1995_Volvo_940.shtml
Somewhat worse in real life compared to being on an EPA rack or test track. Somewhat worse with worn/aging components (the car I mean). Somewhat better on premium gas. Somewhat worse when the driver is wearing lead shoes that day, especially with a turbo. Notably worse when brakes are starting to drag or plugs and O2 sensor are fouled. Horrid in lots of stop and go traffic, again especially with a turbo.

Dave -still with 940's, prev 740/240/140/120 You'd think I'd have learned by now
