Rear Tail Light Question 140-160

Hi,

I've recently picked up a 72 142S. Brand new car to me, never owned or driven a 140 series before.

I noticed that rear tail lights are not working. The rear brake lights work. The rear turn signals work, but otherwise nothing when the headlights are on - both.

My question - with headlights on, should the orange turn signal be illuminated when not turning and two - any quick thoughts? Is there a switch or module?

The side market lights and licence plate lights are working so don't think it's a fuse.

Thanks,
Chris

140's have two parking light circuits + two fuses.... 140-160

140's have two parking light circuits + two fuses. One fuse for each side + one side powers the dashboard lighting. Do the dash lights work when you pull on the parkers? If yes, then the front & rear parker on one side should work.

Rear Tail Light Question 140-160

SG...;

I agree with c1800...locate any breaks in the supply to the rear fixtures and correct...a Wiring Diagram and test light should make this relatively painless...and a bit of ACZP on connectors or brass lamp bases when you access then will keep them reliable...

Note: Ox-Guard is Gardener-Bender's product and it is carried by Blowes...Ideal's Noalox carried by Homeless-Depot is unsuitable as the viscosity is waaaay too low which leads to it running away from the point of application...I recommend strongly against its use in cars, where elevated engine compartment temps will even exacerbate the effect! Grease based Ox-Gaurd or (Burndy's) Penetrox-A are the way to go!

Rear Tail Light Question 140-160

I'd think a wire is crossed up somewhere if the turn signal bulbs are lit with the the lights on. My first 140 (of many) was a '68 in '78. The rear lamps were barely visible. Removing the lenses revealed loads of dirt collected at the bottom of the fixture and coating the inside of the lenses with the parking lamp bulbs practically buried. I have a '69 parts car with fixtures (and loads of lenses in storage) if needed. - Dave

Rear Tail Light Question 140-160

VFH;

If the symptom of two normally unassociated circuits becoming associated occurs, without some some of "work" having been performed, it could also occur due to the oldest and most common of issues...a crummy chassis connection...and since Dir Signals and Marker Lights probably share a chassis connections at the rear light fixture, the likelihood of this is more than remote...I guess my advice would be to find and check those first...then treat with ACZP...

Rear Tail Light Question 140-160

You’ve probably got a loose or corroded connection somewhere. Go through and check all the connections and grounds. Including the headlight switch, all fuses and taillight sockets to body.

And no, the turn signals should not be lit when you haven’t activated them unless they have 2 contacts.

Get some ox-gard at Home Depot to put on all the electrical connections.
