Elring Viton Oil Seals 900 1994

Please let me know if the Elring front cam seal 336 999 and Elring Front Crank seal 465194 are made of Viton.
I haven't replaced them in a long time and it is time to change the timing belt and tensioner. I found some I bought several years ago and remember Viton is much better than the Silicon seals.
Thank you.

Viton material is brown or grey.

Use the seal press discussed here to press the seal into the bore. Adjust for depth.

Elring Viton Oil Seals 900 1994

Hi JD,

I think you'll find that the silicon seals are 10 mm thick, while the Viton are 7 mm.

I have two Elring rear main seals in my stock. One is orange silicon (044.590) and the other a chocolate brown Viton (044.598). I also have your 465.194 Elring front seal that is a light grey silicon, so I don't think there's any standard colors.

Conventional internet wisdom suggests the Viton may be better, but that doesn't mean the silicon are bad. The original rear main in my 90 240 lasted 30 years and 300k miles.

In my case, I would use any seal that I had in my hand rather than reaching into my pocket.

regards, Peter

Dear jd620,

Hope you're well. I've stood aside, to let others more qualified reply. I had thought that Viton seals were grey, while silicone seals were red-orange. I cannot be sure that was always so, much less that if it was so, that it still is so. .

Thus, to be sure of getting a top-quality seal, buy the Volvo brand item. These have long track records of durability. Given the amount of work needed to remove/replace a crank seal, the "extra" cost of getting the Volvo-brand item seems reasonable.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
