I've got a funky driver door look to look at. The trim panel is hanging up by the speaker.
A YT video showed someone press in the speaker to pop out and free some pegs? What's the trick with the retainers by the speaker?

The speaker cover slides fwd. & then the bottom is retained by plastic grippers? that can be slid down w a thin screwdriver There are 3 .

I found that out- Slide the Speaker cover to the right
or forward is the answer.

Now I'm looking for more details about the busted lock assy.
and how to remove and reinstall. The 850 latch is a nasty job to
reinstall. Maybe the 940 is too?

Original problem
The drivers door would lock when first opening the door after it was shut.
You moved the lock button up with the key and the door opens OK.

Solution
(no guarantee as to how long it will behave- keep a key in your wallet)

The upper section of the lock button link was slightly spring loaded
so the top of the link was sprung to the outside.
I reformed the link so it is slightly spring loaded to the inside.
Now you can feel a little drag on the key when opening and there's no more
self locking.

As to the panel, do NOT push on the speaker. The speaker grille should be pressed GENTLY towards the outer door's external surface and slid forward (towards the hinges). These actions - pressing and sliding - will disengage the very fragile tabs on the backs of the speaker grilles, from plastic pegs anchored in the door's interior metal frame.

Once you remove the panel from the frame, you'll need to disconnect the wires that go to the speakers and to the red warning light, at the end of the door nearest to the center pillar.

Spook nailed it. and now I see a different layout than the 740.

I suppose there's a switch adjustment by the door lock motor?
I need details for that.
That unit in the 850 is a major PIA to install, maybe this one is better?

Does the regulator have limit switches?
It gags by not shutting off when it reaches the bottom making a loud creepy noise. Any switch adjustment there?

Hope you're well. If the driver's door locks "on its own", the lock mechanism will need to be replaced.

A spring in the mechanism has broken. It cannot be replaced. First, Volvo never supplied a replacement spring. Second, the spring is installed such that it will be next-to-impossible to remove it. The lock mechanism is Volvo #9127546. It is no longer supplied by Volvo.

This mechanism was used in 740s, 760s, 780s, 940s and 960s, so it should be available from a salvage yard.

As to the window lift mechanism, the diagram in Volvo VADIS - a superseded dealer parts/service database - does not show any "limit switches".

I found this 940 door parts diagram, which part is the critter with the broken latch / spring? How nasty is it to pull and reinstall? It's all hard to see and reach. Are there any Volvo documents to help service the door?

It was warming up in the driveway so I put some windows down and now there's a new problem- The L rear window went down and wont come up? I tried with the rear switch to raise it with no joy.

Hope you're well. Replacing the door lock mechanism is easier if you have "small" hands.

The unit is secured by two Phillips-head screws, accessed from the door's trailing edge (that closest to the center pillar), just above the white plastic "data plate".

The tedious part of the job involves disconnecting and re-connecting the rods, that link the mechanism to the interior lock button and door handle, the exterior lock, etc.

The rods have "keepers", i.e., small spring metal clips that keep the rods in place. If a keeper drops down inside the door, you'll need a magnet on a telescoping rod to retrieve it.

"Lock" right, I'm a lousy typist.
I just came in to post a solved, after using the Gorilla method.
Once its apart you can see how easy it is slide to right and off.

Is there a limit switch for the regulator down position?

The door locks when you grab the release handle from the outside.
Is there a drivers door lock motor adjustment? Maybe there's a switch
that I don't see in my 740 book.

This door was replaced a after an accident and has wide masking tape in the
two upper cutouts that should have Tupperware inserts. The big lower plastic thing is there but the bottom tabs were put on with electrical duck seal rubber
putty gunk.

It doesn't have the flimsy coat hanger bellcrank lever for the lock like the 740
that quits working when the little plastic clip support breaks off from old age.

This is why I like old Volvo's Better than watching TV.

To add to Spook's notes, in case you haven't already figured it out, the red lens on the outer door edge pulls straight out off a similar plastic stud. Be careful pushing the lens back in to make sure the pin is fully protruding to engage with the fingers on the lens, same goes for the pins at the speaker to engage with the thin slotted tabs on the back of the grill. Also, best to pull the three clips under the door panel straight down with something like a hook rather than pry them down at an angle with a screwdriver. The power window switch pod only needs to be slightly lifted to remove the surrounding plastic bezel, but does not need to be removed.
