turbo troubles ..... 700 1986

Dear fellow Volvo people!
Does anyone know?
Will a 1986 Volvo 760 turbo
start properly and run properly
if the exhaust pipe is removed from the end
of the exhaust manifold??? There is only the
exhaust mainifold attached to the engine.
There is no exhaust pipe attached to the exhaust
manifold.
Please tell me or lead me to where I can find out.....

thank you! thank you! thank you!
Blessings!
Enrique 442

Install the engine in a tractor.

Will it start? Yes, probably.

Will it run **properly**? No. It will not.

It will not have any signal from the oxygen sensor, but on top of that as Kitty said, there is the whole "shooting flames" possibility. If you need to move the car 100 feet, you could do it, but I would try not to.

It will also be VERY VERY LOUD. SO LOUD YOUR NEIGHBORS WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT. Excuse the caps, just illustrating the point.

Thank you Kitty and Will!
We can get it to start but it is very difficult.....
Holding the throttle open and such.....
Then the engine idles with a miss.

Definitely will get the O2 sensor back in place!

With no exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.....
Do you suppose the turbo needs more back pressure
from the exhaust pipe to run properly?

Blessings!

Maybe you wanna inspect the turbo?

I'm not sure now, yet inspect from the exhaust out. You should see the exhaust side Turbo turbine blades.

If not already, what is the condition of the manifold to exhaust gaskets and also the manifold studs.

You may want to ask this question at Turbobricks.

Disconnect your AMM wiring harness.......then try starting your car without pressing the throttle.

1986 Volvo 740 Exhaust and ... 700 1986

Without a header pipe (or down pipe) the engine can run yet will be loud and flame will emanate with the exhaust.

Does the engine run at all?

As you have no reply here and your'e asking about a 1986 740 Turbo, as at Turbobricks.com.

Else, the folks here may need more context, like the condition of your 1986 740.

You can purchase replacement headerpipes from iPd USA, FCP Euro, Rock Auto, and other places. I've been lucky to find exhaust sections for 240 from junkyard. The salvage yard will take the catalytic converter, yet hopefully cut it downstream from the header pipe out to catalytic converter input.

You will have to revolve whatever condition this car is in and is it worth repairing and keeping.

At 36 years old, and how many miles, you may need to be concerned about manifold to cylinder head studs and more.

Inspect the wire harness.

The FAQ, Haynes, and Volvo green factory repair manuals may be able to help.

Hope that helps.
