Selling the 940s, keeping the V70s 900

Too many Volvos:

1994 940 NA wagon 274K occasional driver
Two 1998 V70 (160K and 190K) daily drivers
2006 V70 (90K) getting it ready for road trips
1993 940 NA wagon 234K - now a parts car
1999 S70 parts car

The 1994 940 recently received many new parts, then developed a significant driveline vibration. The AW71 transmission output shaft bearing had excessive play, it was replaced with a good used bearing (new ones are no longer available). Driveshaft U-joints and center bearing are new. Most of the remaining driveline problem seems to be from the rear differential, which is obviously failing with an extreme amount of input shaft backlash. Perhaps the pinion preload was disturbed when a previous owner had the pinion seal replaced at a non-Volvo shop. If an impact wrench was used to tighten the pinion flange, the result could have been incorrect ring-pinion mesh that slowly damaged the gears. Still, the differential did last 274K miles...

The 1993 940 parts car has a good AW71 transmission, driveshaft and rear axle but it is time to pass on both 940s to a new owner. Maybe someone who enjoys working on 940s and would like to swap the 93 rear axle into the 94.

I have plenty to work on with the three V70s and will always appreciate the RWD Volvos we owned - first a 240, then a 740, then the two 940s.

If anyone is looking for some fun fixing up a 940, check my listing on Charlottesville Virginia craigslist. Use search term "Volvo 940" and it will appear.

Thanks to everyone from the Brickboard who helped to keep my RWD Volvos running over the past decades. I expect the V70-related forums will continue to help me keep the three V70s running.
