I'm rebuilding the M41 transmission in my 1800ES. The outside of the gear case in in need of a paint job. The color is not the same red as what is on the B20 engine. Does anyone know the paint color for the transmission? Anyone know where I can get the paint. A single spray can should it.

This is just a semi matt red oxide paint. Anti rust red oxide will match it well.

Thought the color reminded me a bit like marine bottom paint. Was not sure if there was an "official" color. While I am not going for a truly faithful restoration of my 1800ES, I want to be as close as I reasonably can.

Lift off the shifter cover, the inside should be the same colour only much better preserved so you can get a good match.

Yes, I noticed the matching color on the inside of the case. Guess the challenge I am having now is finding a durable and high temp tolerant paint of a color close to this. I know the tranny does not get as hot as an engine, but it will got hot enough. Also, the tranny exterior is exposed to plenty of abuse from rocks, dirt, salt, etc. Both of these issues kind of make everyday spray paint a non-starter. However, the engine type paints that are up to these conditions generally come is colors way different than the original tranny paint. Any sources of paints I should look at that I may have missed?

You might look at an appointment color of red oxide primer and then give it a coat of clear caliper paint assuming you’ve dismantled the whole transmission so you can bake it in an oven at the appropriate temperature for the required period of time. Both these products are available in spray cans, VHT Caliper Paint for example needs 100c for one hour.

I asked this same question a while back and didn't get an answer. Now I have the answer.... You want Rustoleum Farm & Implement in red oxide.

Excellent I'll be painting my gear box soon as well so will keep that in mind, although unless you live where the corn is as high as an elephant's eye, you're out of luck for anything but John Deere Green and Cat Yellow.

Little update, I used a Burnt Orange with a dusting of Red Oxide to get a reasonable match to the colour inside my gearbox.

Looks good! But is that OD unit clocked wrong in relation to the trans box? On my 73 ES the ID tag is located on the bottom side. It would appear that the tail section with the speedo drive is positioned correctly in relation to the trans.

My OD is D Type, I would expect yours is a J Type, a somewhat more rugged unit.

Hello All,

For those who may not know, the early M41s with D O/Ds came with an aluminum overdrive to transmission adapter and rear bearing retainer which would have a natural finish, while the later M41s with D O/Ds came with cast iron adapters and bearing plates and those were painted/coated to match the transmission case.

Eric it just looked so right that I left it natural aluminum even though I thought it was supposed to be transmission orange, thanks for sorting that out.
