the old seat belt trick in my 92 245 which is always reliable when the other 2 tanks crap out

hi kit g , arty ben and other brutha sages here- think this pia/malady should be common in 29 year old 245s but dont think it has been reported or remedied in the forum. could be what we call in law practice- a case of the first impression. my left seat belt works but now always gradually retightens by itself while motoring on tobacco road. have to make numerous readjustments every 3 miles. fear will have to elude coppas trying to ticket me for inattention while readjusting. rememba heavy 245s with the 4cyl are not known for fast launches and high speed. figure the mechanism behind the plastic panel on the door pillar has lost its spring tension or its locking pawls have crapped. fear it may be a massively complicated computer controlled repair job. get a load of this - dealer wanted $550 to repair(caused me to suffer severe sticker shock in the ER) . would love to hear from any brutha who has done this job. bet arty and kit could do this with their eyes closed. thanks tons oldduke

    Hiya Uncle Old Duke!

    Sure Happy it's Wednesday!

Yep, Uncle Arty B. has your answer.

Yes, the seat belt retractors do that. The flat ribbon spring can some undone as the tab at the (center) end breaks. Some pieces of small metal rods serving as stays come un-stayed. I forget the top-heavy thingy that locks in place during fast stops. They can get grabby as you describe.

    Art has your answers!

    Hope all is aces!!!

Nearing the warm months so I hope you Saturn is ready to go in cool comfort!

None of my 240s have AC to this day. Oh well.

hi kit g- glad to hear you are resting well and luxuriating amidst your fleet of volvo 240s. thanks for the info from arty b. will get to it . but saturn is first. that one is currently disabled due to leaking oil pressure sender switch so volvo since it still rolls has been brought out of semi retirement into front line service. will keep you posted. why do tanks typically crap out in pairs, rarely one at a time. thanks tons oldduke

Haven't been in there for better than 20 years, but this is what I found back then:

    http://cleanflametrap.com/v83belt.html

For $500, you should be able to get an entire replacement from Atlanta or some such place.

Hershey's Kisses are called that because the machine that makes them looks like it's kissing the conveyor belt.

hi burco- yes youre right. think volvo dealers are the worst at shystering. when forced to send work out always try indies first. cost is usually 1/2 or less. looks tricky getting to the part through pillar plastic covers popping off, crumbling , etc. any tricks or shortcuts? thanks tons oldduke

hi Duke, have you taken off the plastic cover and looked?
    It's easy to take off.

One cause: the belt has fuzzed-up.

I had a problem once---- though this CAN'T BE your problem.----water got in and during the winter, ice formed on the retractor.
The rocker panel drains were clogged and water froze the mechanism------The retractor is in the rockerpanel space.

Another cause: You may just have dirt/crap down there. Got mice??--could be a nest.

Take off the plastic cover---easy- I've taken both off on 2 wagons so I could run speaker wires up to the headliner and to the added rear speakers------Easy to take off.
