brake calipers 164E 140-160

Hi All

I hope someone can advise the difference in the mounting holes between ATE and Girling front calipers on a volvo 164

Does anyone know where i can purchase the Ate front calipers

Thanks in advance

Cheers David

Volvo used 2 different styles of front ATE calipers for the 140/164 Volvos, 1 for solid brake rotors and another for vented rotors. Both styles of ATE calipers use the same brake pads, but the ATE pads are different than the Girling brake pads.

The front Girling calipers and both styles of ATE front calipers bolt right onto the same 140/164 front spindles regardless of year and can be interchanged and you don't have to change hoses.

Which ATE calipers do you want, for solid rotors or for vented?

FYI, We have a freshly rebuilt set of the calipers for vented rotors in stock and ready to go.

I've only seen the one type of ATE caliper on 164E down here, but I've only worke on about a dozen 164's.
1. Early 164S B30A's have the thick solid disc with wider Girlings same as seen on 140E's & 140GL's
2. All 164E's & 164GL's have the vented discs with the smaller ATE calipers & pads.

NOTE: The early 164E's I have seen have 1/16" Bigger? master cylinder. Later 164GL's revert to the 140 size.

What's different with the 2nd ATE calipers?

I've only seen ATE front calipers for solid rotors on some pre-1972 Volvo 140s.

The 2 different front ATE calipers are basically the same using the same rebuild kits, caliper pistons and brake pads. The brake pad retaining pins are longer for the calipers for vented rotors and the anti-rattle springs are wider too.

Rear Brake Calipers & Boosters 140-164's - I've seen Girling REAR calipers on nearly all 140-164's, in fact, I've only seen the ATE REAR caliper on a 7-seat 1974 145GL, they don't seem any bigger, however.

Boosters: Large Volume ATE on all 164's, Regular size Girling on 1967-1972 most of the time, but occasionally a regular size ATE booster. Regular Girling size on 73+ DL, Large ATE on 73+ S & GL.

BUT this is in Australia, B18 & the first B20 cars imported from Sweden, Australian made from 1970ish onwards. Not hard to tell the difference.
