Maintaining a 2001 V70 S90-V90 2001

I bought my V70 from its only owner, a Yale professor, back in 2016. Then it had about 248k miles - now it is up to 278k. It has been great to me in the past 4-5 years with limited issues - I mean, I paid $1800 for it. Best of all - manual transmission. I was able to handle a few quirks from advice here (taillight issue which ended up being a relay recall issue as I discovered though not an actual recall with my VIN).

So - now I have the following issues and want to address them in proper order. Any advice would be great.

Engine revs up or revs then dips suddenly, especially stopped at lights, to the point it might sty at 3k RPM or dip down to near 0 - usually it is steady stopped at 1k. Mechanic said it was likely the accelerator pedal sensor.

Alarm system service light. I mean, I have only experienced the flashing lights as an alarm. Can I get rid of this - don't need it? Can non-Volvo mechanic clear it?

ABS service needed. Same here as above?

Check Engine - o2 sensor and catalytic converter. What to do?

Strange battery drain. Picked up a piece of furniture on CL and had car parked with hazards on. Battery died in 5 min. Happened once before when I had key on position 2 with radio on while I cleaned out car for 5-10 minutes. Once it stalled at a stop light - could be related to my first issue above?

And what items should I be checking in on at this point? At 278k, I have only put on 30k in 4-5 years. City person here/not daily driver. Always checking fluids/oil.

    Hiya John,

Rev dips, could be dirty or failing electronic throttle module or the aforementioned pedal.

Alarm system - There's an old battery in the alarm module deep inside the fender of your car. The battery has leaked all over the rest of the electric bits. I was able to ignore it in my V70. but YMMV.

ABS service - can you get the codes read out? Could be faulty control module, could be a wheel sensor, or?

At 278K miles that O2 sensor doesn't owe you or anyone anything. Replace it. Cat. converters are robust and unlikely to be the problem all on their own.

Battery drain - How old is the battery? Sometimes they just give up, especially if a car is driven infrequently and only in the city. After about five years you're on borrowed time.

For all of the above, a site search and/or Google is your friend. You'll have to sift through the info, but you'll get better advice than what you get from me. ;-)

What to check on at 278K? My '01 V70 2.4T had a head gasket failure at 267K (and 5 years ago). So maybe a coolant flush if you haven't done one. Besides that my V70 was pretty good. Voltage regulator went out, but alternator brushes were still good at 200k+. Worth a once over around the car at grounding points and all the electrical connections at the battery, including the 12V accessory connections. These cars don't like poor electrical connections; they can cause all sorts of weird things.
The heater core connections tend to fail and leak (the rubber o-rings) so keep an eye out for missing coolant, wet carpet in the front footwell. You're likely already familiar with the bread clip trick for shimming the clutch on the AC compressor (I prefer the zip-tie method). Oh and keep that PCV system clean.
Lastly, you might think about a drain/fill of that transmission, for the resale value. The M56 in your car is sought after by a certain community of Volvo owners. The rest of your car could turn to dust, but the trans and third pedal will remain valuable as a "manual swap".

    Best,
    Will

      Will,

Thanks - great info! More and more I am thinking the one issue is a failing ETM. My car stalled once (while driving but I was at a stop light) a few months back. What is the best way to address this?

The only other thing I can think of that might cause that sort of issue is a faulty turbo boost control valve. Either way I'm not sure how to properly diagnose without the proper Volvo scan tool.

I ended up taking mine to a local Volvo-only independent shop to have it diagnosed. Ended up costing more than it should, but cheaper than throwing parts at it until finding the right thing (or not finding it at all).

        Hi,

Sounds like you have you answer, yet you posted in the rear wheel drive (RWD) forum.

You will want to post to the all-wheel drive (AWD) forum. Click the AWD at the top of the page.
