240 Dashtop Crack - How to best repair? 200 1990

Hi All- I have a 240 w/a crack on the dash top and the material is also peeling-away a bit near the glovebox. Any suggestions?... aside from those covers, I'm not really liking those.Thank you!

I used a cover from IPD over mine. Any other repair technique that I've seen (and I've seen quite a few attempted) leaves you with a repaired crack that looks repaired. Which begs the question - does the crack or the look of the repair bother you more? Here's one approach - https://rubnrestore.com/how-to/repair-cracked-dash/ Do a search - there are TONS of videos and resources out there.

There are companies out there that restore them -- but the dash has to come out AND be sent off. It's pricey. And not unlikely that while removing the dash, you'll break some other plastic bits.

Here's the kicker - once the cracks start, they are likely to show up in other places on the dash. So you repair one -- and then another rears it's head. That's why I prefer the covers. Pics below of mine with and without the cover.

Thanks for the image of your dash. I have been considering one of these for my 1983 242 DL for some time. IPD says "Installs relatively easily considering the professional results." But they supply no install instructions or other info. So I have wondered about the install process and what is involved. Can you please recount your experience or post the instructions that came with yours? Thanks

Many, many years ago - IPD supplied cap and it came with a tube of silicone adhesive. Their instructions suggested gluing it into place. But for a variety of reasons I didn't want to do that. So I drilled 4 holes into the dash - one on each side of the center speaker grill and one on each side of the cap where it wraps around the dash - you can only see when the doors are open. I used interior trim screws (with built in washer). I drilled the hole in the cap about 2 sizes larger than the screw so that there was room for the cap to expand and move around without buckling -- didn't tighten the screws all the way down; just enough for the washer to barely contact the cap. It's in year 18 of the "beta" test.

Thanks. Not sure I would wish to glue it down either.

Thank you MH,

I appreciate the info and links. Your dashtop looks great! I agree, too pricey to remove. I'll review and make some type of a decision &%$#$&!

Best, BK

Oh. So that's a hard cover? I've been thinking I also need to do something for our '89 244. I haven't shopped for such a thing for a while and was always thinking of the soft, "carpet-looking," covers. I think yours looks good from the photo. Thank you.
