M41 manual transmission similarity 1800 1970

My 1970 1800E is equipped with a manual M41 trans/overdrive. I just had the clutch disk, pressure plate, pilot and throwout bearing replaced, so I have eliminated them as the sound source. I suspect I have a transmission shaft bearing problem that is making a whirring sound. I have a spare M41 transmission of unknown model year. My question is: Are all M41 manual transmissions the same or are the ones connected to an overdrive different. If they are the same, and I decide I can't live with the whirring, I might swap them.

You will NOT be able to easily install any D overdrive transmission in your 1800E due to the difference in size of the driveshaft flanges.

Are you sure you have an M41? Volvo installed M410 transmissions in 1970 and then went back to the M41 the next year.

The easiest way to identify an M410 is by checking the location of the drain plug. M410s have a drain plug on the bottom of the case and easily visible by looking under the car. While the M41 has a drain plug on the passenger side of the case and is partially hidden by the exhaust.

Eric, You were correct. The Combination trans/overdrive on my 1970 is a M410 with the drain plug on the bottom. The spare I have is am M41 with the following markins: GFBE & 3656501 and side drain plug. I guess I'll just post the incompatible spare for sale on the classified. Thanks for the info.

You can't use a J type OD on an earlier D type gearbox and vice versa. If your spare GB happens to have come from an Amazon you will have to swap out the internal speedo drive gear to suit your 1800. The teeth are different so you can't mix and match. Unless you know the history and condition of your spare, consider getting that one checked and refurbished as needed. That would give it added value regardless of whether you use it or not. Of course you can do the same with the box in the car. New bearings and maybe a couple of synchros may be needed. New synchros getting scarce but good used ones often available.
