AW7x Transmission Interchangeability 900

Can a 03-71L be replaced with a 03-70L? The 03-71L is in a 1993 940 non-turbo wagon. The 03-70L is from a 1990 740 non-turbo sedan. From what I've read I think they can be interchanged. Right?

AW7x Transmission Interchangeability Tailshaft bnushing v. bearing? 900

If you have an AW7x and want to swap, does the tail shaft bushing AW7x version versus the tail shaft bearing AW7x bearing version have a different length?

Also, could the AW7x output flange vary in diameter?

Finally, the 1992-1993+ AW7x, no more tail shaft bearings are made by AW or the bearing company that made them. Sort of an AW7x with tail shaft bearing armageddon eventually?

Wondering.

The 2 transmissions are completely interchangeable. The main difference between a 70 and a 71 is the shift quality. There "cushions" that smooth out the shifts on the 70. On a 71 those "cushions" are deleted resulting in a more snappy shift. Use the torque converter original to each transmission. - Dave

Do you know if there are any problems with replacing a AW71L w/convertor with a AW71 w/convertor? This is in a 1993 940 non-turbo wagon. Thanks

You will lose the lock-up function but otherwise there would be no problem. - Dave

I had it on my '92 940 Turbo. Once at cruising speed (I guess it's sensitive to throttle pressure-the kick down cable) the transmission makes a very subtle shift from OD and the rpm comes down a few hundred revs lower than normal OD rpm at whatever speed. On a long trip I guess that could amount to 1-2 mpg cost if not in operation. - Dave

Thanks for the info. Do you happen to know if that difference in the way the two trans shift is due to differences only in their valve bodies, or are there other differences? Just curious.

I'm suspicious the problem with mine is within the valve body; something clogging it or something overly worn in it that's keeping it from shifting to 4th gear. My trans has always performed well until now.

I do not know if there is actually a difference in the valve bodies themselves. The "cylinders" I wrote of are built into the body of the transmission itself (positioned vertically) and covered by the installed valve body. The "pistons" are rather flat and have an "o" ring around the perimeter. Those "pistons" are deleted on the transmissions (71) meant for turbo cars. Beyond that I do not know. - Dave

Dear chrisbradberry,

Hope you're well. In the Volvo pocket data booklet - Cars (700, 850, 900) 1991-1996, there are several pages with transmissions specifications. For most parameters, the data are presented as "70/71". This suggests that the two transmissions are very similar. This similarity suggests a swap should not be problematic.
