Bubble or SAE flair 1800 1971

What if bent my own steel brake lines for a 1800E but made SAE flairs instead of bubble type flares? It has seem to work when tightened significantly at each caliper and blocks. The car doesn't seem to stop as fast as my buddys 1800. It doesn't leak but stopping time is worse than his car. Would this be a big problem or should I be looking for something else?? BTW.. all the calipers, master cyl. and brake block are quite new.

    What about your brake booster? And, does your car have an agressive, vaccum-robbing cam?

      Thanks for some solid answers on the flares. I DID double flare when those steel brake lines were replaced some years ago.
      I upgraded to the middle of the road Blue Hawk pads, and had the brake booster redone a few years back. Also, changed the rubber hoses to IPD's stainless hoses.
      Still scratch-in' my bald head with this matter.

        The 1800E/164 ATE brake booster has an odd feature in that the brake master seals the front of the booster. This requires a seal on the back of the brake master.

        Our rebuilder doesn't supply a new seal for the brake master, so we have to check the old 1 and we keep new seals for the back of the ATE brake masters in stock.

            Hello,

            The original Volvo part number for the o-ring is 680906.

            We have the Volvo version in stock for $7.75 or we can get an economy version for $3.00, but we don't have them in stock.

            The brake master is held on with only 2 nuts, so I would suggest that you take the time to move the brake master away from the booster and see if there is an ~2" diameter o-ring on the back of the brake master or they sometimes are stuck to the brake booster.

            FYI, if the o-ring were missing or damaged, there should be a significant vacuum leak that should affect the idle.

        Is that brand new MTD brake booster that IPD offers any good ?

    Bill;

    Only double flares are used in brake systems, NEVER single flares, and you probably wouldn't want to change flares anyway because they wouldn't correctly interface with the components they are supposed to connect to...besides, types of flares do not affect braking effectiveness!...if you are comparing brake effectiveness with another car, I'd look at Brake Pad material, discs and tires...

      There are NO bubble flares on an 1800E.

      The 1st couple of years of the P1800 have a lot of bubble flares and all of the 3 piston brake calipers have bubble flares.
