Accessory gas can. 444-544

Does this fit inside the spare tire ?. 1957 PV444 .Wife brought it for Christmas and it's rust free inside. I think I remember seeing a picture of one inside a PV Spare tire well.

About 10 years ago I purchased a heavy metal spare tire gas can on eBay for $55. The same can was available for older BMWs.

This can has metal as heavy as a jerry can and the lid seals with a mechanical linkage that seals it completely.

It also has a spout that attaches to the can with a clamp.

I just looked on eBay and a similar cans sell for $350 to $699 (for a Mercedes), WOW!

I actually let my 544 rum out of gas to see how accurate the gauge was. The gauge was spot on - when it reads empty - it WAS empty.

After I poured the spare gas in the Beetlebomb. he started right up.

Tire rim rivits. / jerry can fitment 444-544

Never thought about the rivets in the 1957 wheel rims manufacturing until taking pictures today. Back then tubes were inside every tire. I did fully paint each rim 100%. Tires are all hold pressure. ...Never gave it a second thought until I fitted the Jerry Can about air leaking past the 12 rivets . 😎

I suppose instead of a full tire tube you could fit the kind of rubber band that gets installed inside wire wheels. It took me a couple of flat tires on a Jaguar when I was a kid to figure out what was needed--after being reminded that that's what we did with bicycle tires. - Dave

Tire rim rivits. / jerry can fitment, Volvo from heck 444-544

Thanks,Dave. Never gave a second thought to the riveted rims and tubeless tires. I wonder how many riveted rims had their tires to flat before realizing air was leaking from the rivets when changing out to the new radial tubeless tires.
👉😲👈. I'm sure all my tires will hold air since fully painting each rim with three coats of white epoxy appliance paint. I do know of some BMW motor cycle owners that
silicon all the spokes on their rims so they can eliminate the tube and ride tubeless. Something I would not trust due to the rims being made for tube installed tires. Tubeless sure make plugging a flat easier. You don't have to remove the tire.😎 The rubber band on bicycle rims was to keep the spoke ends from cutting into the tube. I can see where it would seal with your spokes Jaguar rims. Can we even get car tire tubes anymore.?😬

As I read your answer I had a flash of what the whole story was with the Jag - this was 1965 so I was a bit fuzzy. The Jag used tubes but without a rubber band covering the spokes the tubes would get holes worn. Took me using up all the local used 16x6.00 tires and found a junk yard in Brooklyn where a pickup with 5 brand new tires was being scrapped. They sold me the 5 tires for a total of $25. I was very happy to be able to remove (all by hand) the tires I'd borrowed from my dad's 1935 Packard 16x7.00 six ply tires that rode like they were made of cement. - Dave

Good to see that it fits the wheel in the vertical position. I'd not seen the hooked handle before. Makes sense now. Nice one. The spout can be accommodated by the can being offset downwards. On the other, newer one, the central bolt fitting centralises it in the wheel.

Making it out to the shop today with the Volvo accessory Jerry can to see if my memory is correct from a picture I saw many years ago. This must have been a very early production Jerry can. Picture will be taken.

I think this is one of the very early Volvo cans, so quite rare. With the spare wheel in the early PVs being stored horizontally under the shelf it would just sit in the spare wheel. The angle of the neck is rather shallow but am I wrong in thinking that the early PV's only had a 3 1/2" wide rim? If so that would help with the fit. The one that Erik mentions is fitted in a vertical spare wheel. The screw fitting is into a recessed nut and not actually through the can. If using the wheel retainer from an 1800 or Amazon Wagon you have to be careful not to screw the wing nut down too hard and damage the can. It fits the Amazon and PV. There is a pic of it in this thread. I have one of these and they are not particularly rare.

Believe it or not, but the correct spare gas can that fits inside a 444/544 spare tire has a hole in the center. The hole is for the spare tire retaining bolt.
