Cigarette lighter removal 200 1991

Long time no post y'all.

Mrs Klankenborg despite everything still runs well. She sat for four weeks before I tried to start her up today and despite sluggish cranking she fired up as usual.

I want to remove the cigarette lighter housing and install a dual USB socket I got from amazon (who else?). Looks like a simple swap with spade connections, but I can't get the lighter to pop out of the center stack. I've removed the adjacent switches and blanks but the square of plastic holding the lighter appears to be part of the stack and the lighter socket despite spinning loose in the holder won't come out.

What is holding it in there?

    See pic.

    USB outlet bought here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0872NV65J/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_VR76FbW84D1QA

Now, the thing circled in red? What the heck is that? I must have knocked the cover off it because I swear that was a blanking plate before I took the center stack cover off to enlarge the opening to fit the new outlet.

There's an unused slot between the defrost switch and the hazard switch, with a single orange wire going into it.

        That halps!

I found the little black plastic cover for this thing sitting on the ground on the exact opposite side of the car I checked yesterday. All better now!

      Hi,

That looks very neat and a thoughtful package to have a way to run it with out a key in the ignition, if you wanted to wire it that way.

The cover that fits into that space says “SRS” on it.
As far as I know it does nothing.

The orange wire if from the module under the drivers seat or passenger seat?
I think Volvo was in the throws of decisions about having a way to arm and disarming the air bags if pushed into making dash mounted ones!

Thanks for your post on this!

      Phil

Aha, good to know. No idea where the little cover went!

The USB socket is just like the old lighter: key must be turned to ON. didn’t know how to wire it otherwise (and I want to be able to leave the dash cam plugged in without having to disconnect it).

    Hi,

I believe there is a thin metal (stamp out) ring nut on the backside that will have to be spun to spin off the housing of the cigarette lighter.

I also believe you will have to remove two wires from the slip on spade type connectors, otherwise, you will be spinning the wires round and around.
The center post is the positive voltage wire and the more bare one is the negative side.
It will, Be nice, if they have spade blade connectors on the USB device. No cutting and splicing!

You will have more room, to see everything, if you remove four screws and two twist clips around the center console. Two are right in front of the transmission shifter.

This way you get a couple inches of slack in case you have large hands or stiff fingers like us older folks! (:-)

    Phil

I have that panel removed on my 245. The "ring nut" to which machine man refers is actually the backside "shell" that screws onto the front part. The ground wire attaches to a blade built into the "shell" and the positive wire connects to the lighter fixture itself. You must remove both wires before you can unscrew the "shell" from the fixture. The ground wire connector is bare--the positive has a plastic shield. - Dave

        Hi Dave,

You are right! I remember now, some are made that way!
It is more of a shell and not a thin flimsy nut but it still stamped.
I guess I was concentrating on the idea, more, that the wires will have to removed before rotating the unit.

Come to think of it, we don’t even smoke but I do have to setup my wife for a USB’s service if we take long trips. Wires strung to and fro but bundled up nice and neatly!
My woman has to have her phone apps jabbering away at her.

I don’t think Sirius sells stand alone radios anymore anywhere.
I have two radios with USB ports but the SiriusXM is not going to be activated for only one car!
We bought a special, stock holders, $300 lifetime subscription to Sirius/Xm (when they were first getting started) about 25 years ago now. We have two renewals left out of three for free.
        HAD is the operative here!
They went to court and are trying to change the agreement to $75 charge, for each a change over!
Not right, but nowadays, nothing is NOT up for gaming!
“Lifetime” is getting to mean nothing! Rigid or cordless tools, in general, are a whole other game!

Anyway, I would look into modifying my lighters, but we have learned that Apple devices are very particular about their power sources. I have a bag full of power gadgets thanks too American proprietary BS!
She will fuss in a blink if we get an incompatible notification even though it still works most of the time!

The way things are going, Maybe, I should look into a slide out auxiliary power panel to fit someplace under the whole back seat!

The idea of electric cars are moving ever closer but the whole “charging proprietary and battery scams” are keeping my hands off of them!

        My Volvos roll just fine!
        (:-)

          Hey, thanks y'all!

I'll put up a pic if this $10 USB thing actually works. It has two ports and an on/off button. Mostly I want USB to power my dash cam, which has a mini-USB input and a 12V plug for a cigarette lighter socket, but while the lighter does work and gets hot, the cam plug doesn't seat right in the socket and won't make a connection. It'll also be nice to charge my phone if needed but I never drive this car long enough to really need that.

Installed a Kenwood head unit a long time ago with USB but for whatever reason the whole thing seems to reset when I use it, probably because modern phones overload the weak current old USB supported, so it has to go through the AUX. The last time it worked reliably was around iPhone 5 days... this monster 11 Pro Max is pulls too much current or something.

"Lifetime" deals aren't really about YOUR lifetime!

Hold the inside of the cigarette lighter.

On the reverse (interior) side of the center console, grab the cigarette lighter and unscrew the outside of the cigarette lighter from the inside you are holding still with your finger.
