Parking lights not working on passenger side

Picked up a used 93 940 wagon this week. Hoping I got a good deal, we'll find out.

The front and rear parking lights on the passenger side are not working. Fuses control both sides, so ruled out a fuse. Swapped bulbs in the front and rear, no joy. Turn signal works in the front, and brake light works in the rear.

Is this going to be a wiring issue or would it be something else? Curious if anyone has run into this before. Not sure I know where to start.

Thank you, KittysGreyVolvo. I can't remember if the bulb out light is on constantly. I don't think so, but will verify. I will dig into your ideas as soon as I can.

Made for North American market, yes. I am state side.

I know the bulb out light comes on when the headlight switch is on and also did when the brake was pressed ... although a new bulb fixed the brake light, just not the parking light.

Parking lights not working on passenger side 900 1993

My problem was a fuse. It's taken a good while to get this car on the road and address all the little things, mostly because of my work schedule. The left and right parking lights are on separate fuses, and the right side fuse was visibly blown. New fuse, and the lights work!

Congrats on your new to you 1993 940 Wagon!

Probably the bulb failure sensor, or bulb out sensor. Some call it the bulb failure relay. Has passive Reed relays inside yet not a relay itself.

If the bulb failure light on when you switch parking light on with the engine running? (Only time to see the bulb failure on cluster light is when the engine is running as all the dash lights are out [usually!].)

Please see the Mitchell Service wiring diagrams.

Also, everybody's RWD 240 and newer Volvo owner pal, Dave Barton's pages on the bulb failure sensor. Your 1993 Volvo 940 uses the red bulb failure sensor like my 1990s Volvo 240s. (Copy and paste URL into new browser tab or window.)

Dave Bartons three part article on the sensor, and how to deal with it. Article 1, 2, and 3 are on the same page. Scroll down from this link to see the rest on the target page.

You will want to inspect the red can bulb failure sensor on the relay and fuse platform hidden behind the ashtray. The cause may be corrosion at the sensor connection with the round connector secured into the relay fuse and relay board from underneath. Caig products DeoxIT-D is your anti corrosion pal.

Also, verify the fuse and that power passes to the bulb failure sensor.

This new to you 1993 940 Wagon is a North American market 940? I ask as that some markets primarily in Europa offer an on dash switch option to turn on and off one side of the parking light set, usually the road side when you are parked. Italy or Spain require this feature when you park on the street, leaving the street side parking lights on?

I'm unsure.

Else, probably the bulb failure sensor. Check for power at the parking light connector socket wire in, as the + Volts DC is split for left and right side inside the bulb failure relay and out through the two separate pins. Some quality time with your electric multimeter may help you reveal the cause!

Questions?

Other folks will show up with a short and correct answer like Uncle Spook and others!

Hope that helps!

Happy Pumpkin Pie Holidayze!!!
