Looking for a PDF copy of Volvo TP30927-1: Reconditioning engine B200, B230 to use for a redblock rebuild. The manual's out of print, and I've got an OTP USB stick with Volvo manuals for 900 series, which alas, does not include anything on the B230F/T engine. I guess that one may be packaged with the 700-series manuals for another $75. Oh well. Help appreciated.

For your 1992 740 Turbo?

I did not find a TP30927-1 as a PDF scan, *yet*.

I use Bing and Google in the search field.

I searched the OZ Volvo archive as 81242DLB21FCA indicates. The Archive has not been organized save for 240 and a few older models, sort of. No TP number matches. A search for "reconditioning' helps not, also. Maybe try recondition or rebuild.

My search is as yet exhaustive for a scanned to PDF version. Volvo Tips proves itself useless, as is usual.

As 81242DLB21FCA indicates, any mentions of TP30927-1 can be found on the Turbobricks site. As you own a Turbo you may want to search and ask there.

The image indicates a February, 1986 publication date. May be not entirely accurate for your 1992 B230 FT. Unless the engine in your 1992 is a 1986 B230 FT with a date stamp before or sort concurrent around February, 1986.

Doubtful current to 1992. Engines do vary year by year as do tolerances and placement of the crankshaft thrust bearing on B2xx at some point. I don't recall. There is a tolerance for crankshaft end float.

I'm concerned that TP30927-1 is a too dated reconditioning manual for your 1992 B230 F engine.

I'm no fan of how Volvo manages their part number schema of their technical service documentation for the RWD (green) and early FWD model (blue color manual) year era.

You will want to ask at Turbobricks. Else, another place to search and ask is at the UK Volvo Forum:

Hopefully some folks here and elsewhere can advise you on a contemporaneous, by model year, engine reconditioning service manual with the correct TP number.

Also, the reconditioning manuals address engine rebuild only.

There may be a part 1 and a part 2. Appears not with the low friction B2xx manuals.

Did some more research on revision of block specs, found this:

Looks like the block was changed with new rod size and main bearing design some time before 92, and then in 93 (?) by introduction of oil squirters. Don't believe mine has those, but probably bigger main bearings and 13mm rods.

Also Volvo's 2 page Crankshaft Journal Spec Supplement is available for a mere $18 or so shipped from their bookstore. I guess worst case scenario I could get it unless the info is available in the FAQ or somewhere else.

It also seems to be Volvo's style, when the info in the manual needs to be updated, to print sticker pages and supplements rather than new version of manuals.

Thank you for a very detailed reply.

I ordered a couple of manuals that I was able to lay my hands on: TP30871/1 and TP31003/1, couldn't justify the higher price for the reconditioning one. Sent a couple of emails to OTP (Original Technical Publications) about missing B230 engine manuals from a supposedly complete 900-series collection, but got no reply.

My experience with accuracy of dates in Volvo green books has been variable: I have a suspension manual that says in the front pages it's current to some year like 1991, though it has sections about 1996- 960/S/V90 series cars. Can't say if anything like that would apply to the B230 manuals.

Volvo lists (at www.volvotechinfo.com) TP30871/1 TP31003/1 TP30927/1 and TP31083/1 as their Section 2 (Engine) manuals, the rest of the Section is about 4-valve engines, EGR, LH2.4, Regina, Cruise etc. There's also a 2-page supplement in Section 2, Group 21, TP31311/1S "Crank Shaft Journal Specification Revision" which may be interesting to check out, but I haven't seen that one around.

Asked for the same on the turbobricks.com as well.

And yes, the car is a 1992 740 turbo; the engine block is now off the car, there's been some surface rust that led to things seizing in the car, but things got free (mostly) after applying copious amounts of PB blaster. Can't get myself to junk the block, and haven't found a better one at local scrap yards yet. Have lots of other parts for this car, and it's a very slow going project.
