Wheel/tires swap S60 to 740 (alloy) 700 1990

Good day all,

I would like some input please on an issue relating to wheels and tires.

I have a 1990 740 turbo with Volvo 16" alloy wheels.

I have been offered a set of free Volvo? rims and tires. I have been told they were taken off an S-60. They certainly look like Volvo
steel rims.

Would be major PITA to test by installation to see if they fit.

Anyone have input, WAG,experience, observation?

My spare is the original OEM steel rim so I can measure/compare.

I am expecting a glaring incompatibility

Details/rim,tire

New Rim label says: 16x6.5 5X108/43
New tire label says: 215/65/R16

740 rim is 16"
740 tire is 205/55/r16

TIA
jimB

If I understand things correctly then the S60 rims have the same hole pattern but the ET (of the German word "Einpresstiefe") is 18 mm deeper than that of 700-series rims (which have an ET of 25). That probably doesn't fit.

To visualise the difference look here.

Grey245,

Thanks for the info.

After looking further, I too am thinking "Nope"

Too bad, nearly new tires and rims and they are free to me

Cheers

FWD vs RWD offset issues -- can be made to work with adapters that shift the wheel "outwards" or with an 18mm spacer (20mm) if you add longer studs that will pass through the spacer.

You'll have a hard time replacing the wheel studs with longer ones.Nothings ever really Free.

Wheel/tires swap S60 to 740 (alloy) 700 1990

hi,

There are spacers available that have their own studs in them. Then it's just a matter of bolting the spacer unit to the hub using the existing studs and nuts.

That's called an "adapter" - spacer is, well, just a spacer. Not too often that someone orders an adapter with the same bolt pattern -- almost always they're used so that a wheel with a different bolt pattern can be "adapted" to the car's bolt pattern.

Whether the choice is wheel adaptor or spacer&longer studs the OP would be facing expenses he is trying to avoid with these "free" wheels/tires.- Dave

Offset issues 700 1990

Michael is right. I’ve heard of folks using spacers on their Volvo wheels when making the swap. Suggest investigating how the different size tire will affect the handling of your car. I’m not sure.

Will I buy another Volvo??? We'll see....
