hi,
i've conducted a visual inspection of my jy m47 tranny. the oil was previously drained and empty before i pulled it.
i didn't see any metal flakes anywhere inside the case. with the gearbox cover off, i slowly rolled the shaft inspecting all of the gears.
observations:
1. no wear, no teeth missing on any of the gears.
2. no leaks from top or back paper gaskets.
3. input shaft has some up and down play, but not forward or back.
4. no case damage
5. no play in rear shaft
6. can hear a ball bearing drop inside it's case when i rotate the shaft as if a ball bearing is loose, but if not packed in tightly, may be normal, not sure. no ball bearings or bearings are making any other noise.
7. no caked-on gunk inside the case, quite clean.
8. looks like the clutch decomposed some and some residue is inside the flywheel, which can be easily removed and clean.
9. the flywheel has no scoring, bluing, heat stress/cracking, and not burnt. i'll get this flywheel resurfaced, though.
question about point 3.
play in the input shaft may not make a difference because it's inserted into the engine and the input shaft splines wouldn't have any degrees of freedom.
after i have some first-level confidence in the tranny being ok this far, i'll ask some questions about what to replace while the tranny is out, obviously the sealing ring, what about the rear housing gasket, etc.
i'll post this in turbobricks, also.
thanks again,
byron golden

here's an image of my drain plug partially cleaned to remove the residue, but gentle enough to retain any metal filings.

my guess is the filings are typical with the age and mileage and doesn't show any catastrophic issues with the gears. it's a little similar to what i find in an auto tranny pan. note that the magnet is is like a spark plug end so the filings will collect at a point.
any input is greatly appreciated.
thanks,

I have changed the fluid with Red Line MTL twice now and that looks like what I have seen also. Mine now has 225 k on it.
Make sure you overfill the trans by lifting the left side of the car as high as you can get it. You should be able to get close to 2 quarts of fluid in it.

hi dan,
thanks for the recommendation. since i have it out, i can pour the redline through the top.
should i pour more in than what you suggest, and if so, any idea how much? i can go as high as the top.
some good news, apparently.
one bearing i have of the 2 nla bearings is intact, p/n 1232993. i'm relieved, at least i don't have to chase down alternate bearings or part numbers for that one.
i'll check in the next day or so about the front counterbalance bearing, again nla, but i found alternate bearings i can use. it sounds like the clanking noise is a cylinder bearing out of its cage.
thanks,

If you have a local bearing supply house they should be able to match what you need.
Two quarts of trans fluid is all you need.

i chased down a substitute. you're correct about checking a bearing warehouse. they would have directed me to something like this or they may have a substitute.
i found the same skf bearing but with a removable inner ring which renders it the same bearing without the ring. dims are exact.
bought a couple older nos bearing, not new ones. i'm concerned about cheap chinese counterfeits.

Hi Byron again,
Just saw this post.
Look somewhat very normal except for some oil film.
Could you tell what was in it by chance?

hi phil,
no, i don't know. i pulled it out of the junkyard.
luckily, i didn't see any metal filings anywhere.
yes, it looks normal except that gunk residue.
i'm considering what to put in it. seems as if redline mtl is what many are pouring in.
thanks,
byron

Any metallic fuzz on the magnetic drain plug?

hi dan,
i didn't see any flakes or fine particles, but the case is empty of fluid. i'll take out the two magnetic bolts and check late tomorrow.
thanks again, dan,

You should also get the CPS mount from the donor vehicle.

Byron (BCG),
My experience with JY transmissions is as follow(s):
I pulled two transmissions back in 2013, and placed one of them in my 1989 transmission swap, the other was kept as a spare.
The first transmission that I put in, tended to leak at the rear after I filled it if I set it on its side at the top of the transmission, which usually sees very little oil as it sits closest to the car. This is why when I do a clutch replacement, I never place the transmission on its side when it has oil in it, as it will most likely leak.
The transmission that I swapped in my 89' has a bad bearing in 3rd, and 5th gear, but it just keeps on going. I even swapped it out at one point as I wanted to test the spare. The spare was much quieter, and I thought it was fine. I was wrong. A short time later, about 6 months or so, the input shaft bearing went south, and one Sunday I just couldn't take it any longer. I, along with my son, replaced it in about 4 hours, and its been going strong ever since.
So I guess after a long winded answer, you're going to just have to shove it in and see what you get. Its the chance you take. It was the chance I took, and it paid off.
I now have 3 M47s sitting on two bench's. One is the spare that I mentioned above, and it is slated to be rebuilt sometime in the future. Another one I already know runs and sounds fine, and is slated to go into my son's 90', and the third came out of a JY 93, which I believe it needs to be rebuilt as well, because it looks like the Exxon Valdez, and that will go into my 93 project car once done.
I plan to take the one that had the input shaft bearing roach, and rebuild that first as a learning experience as I currently have nothing to loose with it. From there I will have made a list of bearings that I need to rebuild the rest. It will be a slow process, but it will be well worth it once I can put one of these back on the road and have it run flawlessly.
Hope all of this helps and makes sense.
Matt

hi matt,
thanks for the reply. that helps.
so, it appears to be an investment, grab some m47s as spares. i'll have to think about it. i'm not inclined to invest in additional m47s because of discontinued parts.
i would be more inclined to go with a t5, more parts, more sturdy of what i read.
i've been chasing down extra m47s and haven't come across any, yet.
regards,
byron

If interested -- I have transmission gaskets and seals I bought from Volvo some time ago when expecting a reseal job to be dropped off. The car never showed up. I'd just like to see a bit of my expenses covered. The gasket between the bellhousing and trans was $30 alone! Contact me at fastforwardphoto(AT)yahoo(DOT)com -- Dave

hi dave,
thanks for letting me know about the genuine volvo parts. i'm having some issues of sourcing some bearings that appear in need of replacing.
i'm thinking that one bearing, volvo p/n 1232993 (nla) has a broken plastic cage which let's a bearing or two to come in contact with each other. it may not matter, though; it may run in that condition just fine.
let me resolve this bearing issue. i may just return the tranny and get my money back. my garage is already full of spare parts, and i'm not inclined to getting a couple of spares trannies.
working on a decision.
regards,
byron
