no belts turning but car starts and runs albeit rough 200 1988

245k on the clock .
alternator was replaced a few yrs back with a Bosch rebuild. PS pump is original and so is the AC compressor
Is my harmonic balancer slipping that bad? I don't see the out side of it spinning at all. I will look closer on next startup to check on that. That is what drives all the belts as far as I know and I would think even if one of the other seized that would still spin being driven by the crankshaft.

    Hi,

Yes, the crankshaft turns all the belts through the inner rubber sleeve.
You should hear some rumble or slight squeal and squeaking if the harmonic balancer is shot.

If the pulley has come loose on the crankshaft shaft, this can look the same because the belts are holding on to it.
How long ago was the timing belt replaced?
You seem pretty proud of the longevity of components on this car.

The pulley has a nice fit up on the shaft and that makes it possible.
It will not take much forward movement for it to become disconnected from a timing belt sprocket.
It has front or rear protruding keys to make up engagements.
The running rough part maybe due to a tooth location being off or out of time with number one cylinder and or the timing of the overhead camshaft.

I would not advise running it, anymore than necessary, in this condition.
You don’t want the timing sprocket to crack as that will happen soon if this is your problem.
The sprocket is made from sintered metal that will not take strain in any wrong direction.
They cost about $30 and are offered just because of this kind of malfunction.

Yep, this thing needs a bit of investigation very soon!

    Phil

Crankshaft bolt fell out. Which makes no sense at all.

Not really surprising at all. The crankshaft bolt isn't a left hand thread so can be loosened by engine rotation if it hasn't been adequately tightened or was tightened without the keyways being fully engaged. The engine can keep running until the bolt is starting to get noticeably loose as long as the keyways manage to stay engaged.

Now that you've had this problem, be sure to check the integrity of both the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer pulley) and timing gear sprocket to make sure they haven't been damaged. You may wish to refer to this section in the FAQ Failure of Lower Timing Sprocket

Note that the proper crankshaft bolt torque is a two step process, 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs) followed by an angle-tighten of 60° (1/6th turn), the final step often requiring a long breaker bar or cheater pipe. A one step torque to 120 ft-lbs (absolute min 90 ft-lbs) is usually a close approximation depending on how wet and dirty the threads are. Impact guns are not at all ideal for the job.

Dave -still with 940's, prev 740/240/140/120 You'd think I'd have learned by now
