1995 940 Fuel Pump 900 1995

Hello . Have a 1995 940 turbo 147,000 miles . Bought last year . Has been running fine until Today . Turned over but did not start . Undid & checked fuel to fuel rail . Nothing . So problem is no fuel. Replaced FPR(fuel pressure relay ). Still no good . After a number of attempts it started . In tank pump whirring/working fine . This year/model only has one fuel pump . If my main/in tank pump was/is bad then why when I did get it to run did it work fine ?? When they go bad are they intermittant good/bad ?? Guess I should replace unit ?? BTW : Pep Boys thinking it had an inline under seat next to fuel filter pump sold me one(Spectra brand). Can I use it intank ? Or is intank unit different unit ? In which case will return & get correct unit. Thanks very much for help/replies .

As others mention, for the 940 B230FT *turbo* you're looking for the higher pressure single in-tank pump Volvo p/n 9438756 which includes the mounting clip and filter sock. Many parts houses list it as available and in-stock, but this often means in-stock at a Volvo distribution centre. That's why FCP is saying it can take an extra couple of days to ship. You can expect similar delays from many other parts houses.

The fuel pump is made by Bosch for Volvo. A number of parts houses offer a Bosch equivalent to 9438756 for about half the price under assorted part numbers depending on what comes with it. These aren't cheap pumps, so that's a significant saving. The current Bosch replacement pump, which is used in multiple applications, is mounted in a black foam collar rather than having a white plastic neck that the original Volvo has. I have every reason to believe it's of equivalent quality to the original (I have had one in for years with no issues). The Bosch pumps do not come with a new mounting bracket, but mount on the original clip just fine. Most, but not necessarily all (especially if you're buying off eBay), will come with the foam collar and screen pickup sock. If you don't get a screen, the original will likely be just fine after a quick cleaning. If you happen to order a naked pump without the foam collar, an SS ring clamp will work in a pinch. Wire spade terminals, a terminal connector block and rubber boots are often included, but I don't recall they're needed in the 940 application. According to the Bosch catalogue, the pump body is p/n 69594 (w/o strainer) and 69458 (w/strainer), neither shows the foam collar. Ipd lists their Bosch p/n as 69694 (pump, foam collar, screen and connectors), which I don't see explicitly listed in the Bosch catalogue.

There are many parts houses listing Bosch pumps in stock for around $100+/$10 with shipping often being the deciding factor. Just buy from a reputable imports parts house that specifically indicates 940 turbo fitment and 9438756 replacement and you should get everything you need. If a description says in-line pump, not to worry, that doesn't mean not for in-tank use, just that it pumps in one end and out the other.

      Dear lummer,

Hope you're well. It has been about a decade since I changed a '95 940 fuel pump: that was a non-turbo model. But I don't recall a "thick red wire".

The spare send units I have have four wires: two carry the fuel gauge signal and two take power to the pump. All four are of the same diameter. The colors - if I recall correctly - are pink and black (fuel pump) and brown & green-white (fuel gauge). The black wire is grounded to the bodywork.

If there's a "thick red wire", I suspect someone has changed the factory-installed wiring.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

Sorry . My bad . Thick red "wire" actually contains those 4 wires within it . One end goes to top outer part of unit and other to electrical connector above wheel in trunk . I probably should have called it a cable maybe .

The 740's used a pink wire to carry the +12v to the pump. Did that change to red on the 940'S?

Sorry, you posted while I was composing the reply. Looks like you're now set for parts. If indeed you're not getting voltage at the pump connector when the ignition is first switched on (KPII) to momentarily spin up the pump and if it's a new relay then one good suspect is an overheated and deformed relay tray socket. First verify that both fuse 1 and 11 are okay. If there's any hint of melted plastic or a loose/recessed connector when inspectig the relay socket then you should lift the relay tray and look underneath to see the extent of the damage. When testing at the pump electrical connector, be very careful of arcing and igniting fuel vapours.

Thanks for input . I am not getting any fuel at all to fuel rail so don't think it could be fuel pressure regulator .

Parts Geek has a couple high pressure in tank pumps in their listing:

      https://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1994/volvo/940/fuel_delivery/fuel_pump.html?rp=electric_fuel_pump

If you want the Volvo brand you might try Voluparts in Atlanta. Best to call them as I’m not sure how complete their website listing is.

        Dear Chris Mullet,

Hope you're well!! www.partsgeek.com has the Bosch item for a tad over $100 U.S. and the Volvo item for about $230.00.

        Hope this helps.

          Hi Spook,
I just gravitated to the cheapest of the cheap, like I do too often, as an example of what a person could do if so inclined. It did look as though they offer many choices. Personally I like that supply house - used ‘em a few times.

            Dear Chris Mullet,

Hope you're well. Because a fuel pump is a mission-critical part - and replacement is time-consuming - I'd use the factory-original supplier's part. Having to repeat a job eats-up savings on parts.

            Hope this helps.

            Yours faithfully,

      Dear lummer,

Hope you're well. Yes! This seller claims - on their website - to have seven on hand:
      https://www.rmeuropean.com/Products/9438756-MFG14.aspx .

Make sure that what they sell is: (a) Genuine Bosch and (b) truly the full-power in-tank pump (rather than a "pre-pump").

Some, who sell auto parts, want to be the next "Harry Potter" author, so substitute fiction for facts. That's never good in the realm of spare parts supply!

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

Nothing beats real Volvo parts when doing repairs. However if you don’t want to fork over that much dough then it can be done with a non Volvo brand pump with some careful shopping....

For some reason the Autozone/Advance Auto/Oreilly’s/etc. can’t get their cataloging right when it comes to Volvo fuel pumps. They may have improved in recent years- I don’t know. But if you tell them you have a Volvo turbo and you need a pump that goes in the tank there’s a big chance you’ll get a low pressure pump. You may have to tell them you have a Regina system, even if you DON’T, in order to make sure you get a high pressure pump.

Over the years more than one person here on the BB have been sold a low pressure pump for their single pump system, only to have to do the job twice to get get up and running again.

    1995 940 Fuel Pump 900 1995

    Dear lummer,

Hope you're well. A fuel pump - at the end of its service life - can work intermittently but only briefly so. Worn motor brushes may just make contact for long enough, that the motor turns. Total failure is imminent.

As you have a turbo-equipped engine, the fuel and ignition system is of Bosch design. Up to and including the 1994 models, Bosch used a two-pump system: a small, in-tank pre-pump and a main pump beside the fuel filter, mounted on the under-side of the floor pan, beneath the driver's seat. For the 1995 models, a single, in-tank pump was used.

As a result, an externally-mounted pump will cannot replace the 1995 model's in-tank pump. Return it to Pep Boys.

The pump you need is Volvo # 9438756. It should be available from a Volvo dealer, e.g., https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/volvo-fuel-pump-9438756 .

While the system is open, you might want to replace the in-tank hose, that connects the pump to the fuel tank send unit. After 25 years' service, this hose doesn't owe you a penny. This is Volvo #3514604.

See the FAQs for guidance as to pump replacement.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook
