Drive shaft support /bearing question 700

The bearing is not making any noise in my 91 740. I can hold the driveshaft where the bearing is and move the entire shaft around hitting all side with a thud. So I suspect the carrier (donut) has lost its rubber and is no longer affixed to the bearing. I have not removed the assembly to take a look as yet. The question I have is this. Is it possible to remove the broken carrier itself, leaving the bearing in place and slip a new carrier into place?

Be sure to mark the relationship between forward and aft shafts so that they will be reassembled in the correct phase with each other. My 1990 740 had keyed splines at the center point so that it could only be reassembled correctly. But there’s no guarantee that yours will be keyed.

        Drive shaft support /bearing question 700 1991

So I recently changed out the prop shaft center support and bearing. I followed a procedure outlined in the FAQs that uses a three jaw bearing puller. This required cutting away the metal casing of the bearing housing.
My brick is 91 740 and couple things to note is that the shaft diameter is 1.75 inches where the bearing attaches. The diameter of the bearing is 3 inches. I could not find a suitable pipe to drive the bearing ( once pressed into the housing) onto the shaft so I used a flat punch and stopped hitting after the "tone " changed.
The setup in my 91 is type 3. This solved some of the vibration issues I was experiencing. And by the way the original bearing was still good , after 220k miles and 30 years.

Are the remaining vibrations driveline related? Some other things you can check are u-joints, tranny and engine mounts.

As I am sure you are aware, some other vibration sources are unusual tire wear or out of balance tires. Damaged wheels can also cause vibrations.

Most if not all the driveline vibration is gone. What I am still experiencing but at a much, much reduced level is a slight "droan" passing through 45 mph. It use to be so obvious before.

              Drive shaft support /bearing question 700 1991

My 90 240 had a whine/drone at a about 45-50 mph when cold outside. Wasn’t sure what it was. Read on the BB it may be the center support bearing. I was able to inject some penetrating oil by slightly prying back the perimeter of the center support as best I could. That must have reached the bearing. Luckily for me, it became quiet after that...:) 300k on that 240 and I never needed to replace the center support or bearing!

With that many miles you could very well also have a worn tail shaft bushing. Than can cause a bit of a rumble in the drive line. It’s fairly easy to detect by shaking the front drive shaft yoke up/down and/or or left/right.

            Drive shaft support /bearing question 700 1991

I got under the car and did not see any leaks. I also pull and pushed and pulled the drive shaft yoke at the rear of the transmission and did not feel any play. Am I lucky so far?

            Drive shaft support /bearing question 700 1991

Good point! I had to replace the tailshaft bushing and its seal in my 90 240 at about that mileage. Another symptom of this is a tranny fluid leak through said rear seal as it can warp along with the bushing. Look for fluid in the area where the driveshaft bolts to the tailshaft.

Depend on which way the carrier donut is. I've seen then put on backwards. The bulging rubber should be forward while the opened cupped end is rearwards. This keeps the road dirt from getting inside. Have the bearing on hand since you'll be putting a side load on the bearing race removing it. Go for the full replacement.

I always use a cut off wheel and cut through the bearing and race until tension is released. mark all relationship of parts.

I just did this same repair, for the reason you mentioned. On deceleration the driveshaft would thunk around like an out of balance washing machine. 28 year old rubber was the culprit. I got a new bearing anyway but the old one was reusable. I cut the old rubber off as per the faq and then used a harbor freight bearing puller to get the old one off. Its tight on the shaft but nothing like the rear axle bearings. It really wasnt tough to pull it off. Do that and press it into the new support and you'll be good to go. I reinstalled it with a piece of 2.25" pipe and a 3# sledge. Having done it once I could probably do it again in about an hour.
