Clocking the transmission mount 444-544 1964

Hi all, I hope you are staying safe and healthy through everything happening in the world right now...

I've finally got my 544 back up and running with a nice freshly built B20.

I've had a heck of a time figuring out how to properly "clock" the transmission mount on this car. I've tried it a couple of times, and neither time has been correct. The transmission either sits too high or low, and it causes some other weird vibrations and things to happen. The car is still wearing the original M40 (though I'm hoping to stuff a M41 into it eventually).

Is there a trick to this? Maybe a drawing I could reference? Changing this mount out is a real pain, and I'd like to get it done right once and for all!

Thanks as always.

Hello Dylan,

Below is the addendum to the green books manual.

You may have another problem. Are you using the correct motor mounts? You should only be using the short PV motor mounts.

FYI, a heavy duty PV transmission mount is now available and IIRC, I have 1 in stock.

Clocking the transmission mount 444-544 1964

Hi Eric, Hope you are well!

I did replace the engine mounts with PV ones, but that was a while ago, and before the previous engine broke a couple of rods and covered both mounts in a serious oil bath. I should consider replacing them.

Visually they look okay, but that doesn't always mean that they are. The engine does look like it's leaning over a bit to the passenger side, but I think the transmission mount could have something to do with that.

I'm not sure I understand the drawing. Is the bolt sleeve pointing towards the ground or the back of the car? It looks like a 90 degree angle either way.

Thanks!

Fig 3 for the PV544. The through bolt being at the bottom means that the larger section of the rubber bush is used to dampen and restrict the movement. The mount is therefore mounted downwards from the bottom rear edge of the gearbox. Ignore the 210 mount.

Hello Dylan,

I'm doing well.

I hope you are doing the same.

The way I interpret illustration #3 which is for a 444/544, the center of the air gap in the transmission mount is clocked so it closest to the ground when the transmission mount bracket attached to the transmission.

That makes good sense. Then the weight of motor and tranny will be compressing the thickest part of the rubber.
