Repacking front wheel bearings 700 1991

Hi All,

I have a '91 Volvo 740 that I need to do brakes on. While I'm in there, I'd like to regrease the front wheel bearings, if possible. My 740 is equipped with ABS. Is it still possible to grease the front bearings with an ABS equipped car, or is the hub a single assembly that needs to be replaced completely?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I have a 740 series parts book. The single hub assembly part#271450 (with ABS ring). There's no individual/discrete front bearing parts for this car. The assembly is sealed you can't grease the bearings.

To replace, unmount tire, unmount the front brake bracket (10mm hex Allen bolts), dismantle the brake disc (10mm locking pin), remove the bearing cap, use 36mm large socket* to undo the hub nut, pull out the entire hub assembly (loose enough to pull by hand, no need any bearing puller), clean the hub spindle, install new hub assembly. Tighten the 35mm hub nut to 74ft lb then tighten 45 degrees angle more. Reassemble other parts. Done.

*may need to use 36mm socket for the 35mm hub nut. If you use exact 35mm socket some might not even fit due to internal design to cope for high torque. Really need to use cheater/breaker bar.

    Regards,
    Amarin.

      Hi,

      I don't understand "no disassembly."
They had to put it together in some fashion or way?
Is it a crimped "in" assembly only?

I have never seen any hubs from these cars.
Have they made them user "unfriendly?"

I have a tool made by Camel, that is a thin curved smashed down tube with a zerk fitting.
It can be inserted down beside the spindle to get to the rear bearings and a grease gun is used to pump grease through it.
You just got to have the exact same grease used before or wash it all out.
Just that makes you pull the unit and inspect the bearing anyway.

So you can tell I have not used it much.
It's for a quickie lube, catch you later, because the grease is still looking.
Also, it for, I'm in one of my lazy moments!
      (:)

      Phil

One complete unit with the bearing pressed in. I brought two replacement hubs for my 1988 745t. Don't forget a new axle nut. Brought mine from an Ebay seller .$45.95 for both, no axle nut.
