444 6 Volt Wiper Motor on 12 volts 444-544

I experimented running my 444 6 Volt Wiper Motor on 12 volts. Runs crazy fast.

I happen to have a GM A/C blower motor 3 stage dropping resistor (they mount in the duct near the blower on older GM cars/ trucks).

Looks like I may be able to have two speeds or if too much torque lost on low setting then probably have enough torque at the next faster setting.

This 444 is undergoing major modifications, so 6 volt battery won't be a choice.

Using a Chevy S10 2.8l V6 with 5 spd.

    I went through my pile of ignition coil resistors and found one of unknown application that ends up with ~ 8 volts on the motor and ~ 1.5 amps.

    I checked the temp of the resistor with my handheld temp gauge and it was ~130 F after running 20 minutes on an 80 F day. The motor never got over 85 F

    You can increase the speed of a shunt wound motor by inserting a resistor in the field coil circuit. I did that with my 1965 MGB with a switch to get a high speed.

    Steve;

    "running my 444 6 Volt Wiper Motor on 12 volts. Runs crazy fast"...what did you expect it to do on double voltage?? It needs a Dropping Resistor, but if the GM DR is suitable is not guaranteed...you need to measure voltage with DR connected...and those GM DRs are located in airstream to remove the significant heat they WILL produce...they are an option I guess, but a low quality one IMO (they are quite cheaply made and I've seen them fail where the nichrome resistance wire interfaces the connector terminals)...you might consider an industrial quality Dale type which you can mount on a sheetmetal surface to shed the heat.

    ...there are other items which might be of interest to you when changing a 444 to 12V...

    Cheers

      another option, the one I chose, is to scrounge up a rear wiper from a 245. It's pretty much a direct replacement but it's been a while so I don't remember if there were any details I may have forgotten. Still only single speed though.

        444 12 Volt Wiper Motor (two speed) 444-544

        ...if you like the idea of having two speeds, there is also the option of installing a wiper motor from a 140 (obviously 12V also). See: https://www.sw-em.com/Two-Speed%20140%20Wiper%20Motor%20Assy%20into%20a%20544.htm

        Cheers
