Running wires through 1992 740 fire wall 700 1992

Hello. I want to run two wires rough the fire wall of my 1992 740. I know there is a ripper plug that you can poke and run the wire through. I just worry about water leaking inside after I do that. Any advice? Thanks.

I install low coolant sensor circuits in our Volvos. I poke the wire through that rubber boot on the driver's side firewall (possibly what you refer to as a ripper plug).

I just puncture the rubber and push the wire through. I am comfortable with that for several reasons: I don't feel there is much water that reaches that area and the boot has a tendency to close up around the wire once it is in place.

An added barrier could be created by adding a bit of silicone sealer around the wire.

As Mr. Starkie directs you, Mr brick driver.

Use a quality stranded copper conductor wire or a proper gauge for the current that endures underhood conditions of heat, vibration, and chafing where the wire you want to install and route between endpoint connections.

It can help to also route the wire through a section of quality sheathing for auto underhood use. I'm unsure vendor brands and there quality for auto wire harness mods or additions. I have a few boxes full of conductor and sheathing.

The wire insulation temperature rating may be at minimum 80°C and if routing or pressing against the engine block or encountering exhaust port manifold radiant heat, to 100°C.

There exists conductor insulation at a temperature of varying qualities.

Bundle the new wiring you are installing to limit movement when the new wire encounters underhood turbulence.

      Hope that helps.

      Questions?
