Since it is going to last a long time. quality gear oil is important. Many differentials have vents, check to see if yours has one and see that it is clear.

    Check the FAQ.

The correct lube is important, my 544 has hypoid gears that require a special lube, while I think that yours does not.

Folks - AFAIK there is no scheduled Volvo maintenance on differentials. Yes, it is good maintenance to change it. Me, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’ve owned multiple older Volvos and BMW’s and have never had a differential problem. Other than a friend who had a slow leak in his 740’s diff I’ve never even heard of an issue with them. Volvo diffs are pretty robust.

Differential oil can last the life of the car. Maybe change every 100k miles as a rough guide. If it has never been changed it may be worthwhile to do it.

You could certainly repack the rear wheel bearings at the same time as a differential fluid change. That would be good rear end maintenance...:)

Front bearings can be repacked, but you'll need a new seal to do both of them on each side. Rear axle bearings are pre-packed/sealed. They can be replaced, but not repacked.

I'm pretty aggressive on keeping fluids changed/clean. No way I'd let diff fluid go 100k - just me though. I keep mine on a 4 year/50k mile change interval, whichever comes first. And it's usually the 4 years that pops up first.

You dont repack it. thats for bearings you take out & replace that grease. You can check the level of the differential at the fill plug when the cars on level ground.
Checck the Tag onthe axle to see what type it is. I have a 93 940 w limited slip..,,I think 740s are different ut whoknows if the axle was switched out...
