pilot bearing won't fit 140-160 1973

QUESTION: are there different size pilot bearings for the 1973 145?

I don't see very well, so if the answer is obvious, take it easy on me because I'm working more by feel than by sight. I'm swapping out the BW35 and replacing it with M40 in my 1973 145. The pilot bearing I got with the clutch kit does not fit inside the crank. I can't see if there is a sleeve inside the back of the crank for the auto input shaft, but it feels like there is. I tried using a pick, but I had no luck. If there is a sleeve, it's too thin to use the old bread trick to remove it.

The OD of the bearing I have is 1.378in, and it's too big.

You may have already done this but if you measure the difference between the bearing OD and the BW35 shaft you can determine the thickness of the sleeve and come up with a method for its removal.

I did the same BW35-to-M41 conversion a couple years ago but I can’t remember how I attacked it. It must not have a big deal as it didn’t leave an impression on me. And I don’t own a bunch of special tools either. Well there is that lead concrete anchor that I converted to a pilot bearing puller about 35 years ago. Still works well to this day :)

I don't recall the exact set up used for mating the torque converter to the crankshaft but I do remember that sometimes the part just falls off - and sometimes it seems locked on. Are you seeing the actual end of the crank -- or a plate sandwiched between the flex plate and crankshaft? -- Dave

As was suggested, take a picture with a cell phone or small camera and download it to your computer - then, perhaps you can enlarge it so that you can see what is there.

#460455 Guide Bushing is used with BW35
#11009 Ball Bearing (Pilot Bearing) is used with M40/41
Use a hook on a slide hammer to remove the bushing or a carefully wielded Dremel.

Thanks, this is what I was hoping someone would tell me before I just started scraping and gouging.

What's the part number on the pilot bearing?

Can you post a picture of the back of the crankshaft?

        That picture explains everything.

You need to remove the pilot bushing for the BW35 before you can install the pilot bearing.

Spray a little penetrating oil on the bushing and it should slide out.

If it doesn't cooperate, use a pilot bearing removal tool.

Some of the big name auto parts stores will rent tools. The usual procedure is you pay for the tool and they refund your money when you return it.

Do you have a pilot bearing retaining clip?

Thank you for the helpful reply. I crawled under and used bread to force it out. Since mine was an auto, I had no idea there was a pilot bearing retainer either.

Seriously, thanks for being cool and giving me a helpful answer.

            Glad to help.

If you need a pilot bearing retaining clip, I have them in stock and they aren't expensive.

            Good luck with your conversion.

FYI, I've done lots of automatic to manual conversions so if you run into some problems just let me know.
