Hi,on B16 engine the rear seal flange which carries the felt seal has two grooves,one a bit wider than the other. The felt seal seems to fit in the wider groove,nearer crank shaft. What' the purpose if ant of the second, narrower groove.33 & 37 in parts book

I don't know what that extra groove is for.

IIRC, the early B16s came with a single groove but were updated to the version you have.

That's why there are 2 different gaskets for that part in most engine gasket sets.
