16 inch spare tire in 945 wagon? 900

I just got tires replaced on my 16" hydra rims, 205/55R 16 for the 1995 945. Looked in the spare tire compartment and "Oh $hit", I still have the factory supplied 15" spare. Looks tight

What are my options? I do have a 5th 16" Hydra wheel but never put a tire on it.

Will it fit?

Tom

I've got a Hydra spare in my '91 745. Fits fine.

      Dear dm960,

Hope you're well. Thank you for confirming as true that which I supposed: a tire on a 16" rim will fit just fine in the storage area beneath a 7/9 series wagon's cargo space!!

      Yours faithfully,

I have the same problem with my 240, the tire is too wide to fit in the spare tire wheel well. You rarely need a spare so I just keep a 14 inch spare in the car.

16 inch spare tire in 945 wagon? 900

    Dear javalion,

Hope you're well. The factory-supplied emergency spare tire is long past its "safe-to-use" date. Forgive me for laboring the obvious, but rubber deteriorates with time: heat and exposure to air. Thus, any factory-supplied limited service spare tire needs to be tossed. If used, it could disintegrate, literally.

A full-size new spare tire should fit easily in the spare tire compartment. I've stowed full-size tires on 15" diameter rims in 940 wagons. I don't think a 16" diameter rim with tire mounted, should be too large to fit in the compartment.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

I suspect the overall diameter of the spare is the same as the 16" wheels. It should work as a 'spare'. The 205/55/16 might be too thick if you get a nice tire to fit the rim.

I was not thinking. Although the rims are 16" the outside diameter of the tire remains the same as the original 15" tires, and the same as the emergency spare. The rim may be thicker, maybe, but not much more.

I place a length of a 4X4 and a 1X3 on top of the emergency spare tire under the deck hinge to brace the deck from getting damaged by poundage like the wife's fully loaded 50 pound suitcase or me when I have to sleep in it.

I'll throw a spare alloy rim with a tire and check the fit. Should be fine. I'll just go with the lowest cost option. Wife need a spare too and there is shop near by that may have a good used tire.

Thanks all for getting my head screwed on correctly.

      TOm
