940 suspension bushes

I'm contemplating renewing the front suspension bushes (if required when I look).
My question is about a hydraulic press for getting the bushes in an out. Would a 10 tonne hydraulic press do the job, or would I need something more powerful?(20 tonnes?).
Experience only please - no guesses!!

Thanks for the reply Dud. I have read all there is (I think) on the forum, and am part way through the job. It looks like I will be just replacing the antiroll bar drop links and the conical bushes where the radius rod joins the control rod. These are all quite easy to do.

The inner bushes on the control rod and the radius rod (which definitely need a press to change) look pretty good, so I will be leaving them alone for the time being.

I did buy a complete front suspension kit from SKANDIX which has all of the bushes/ball joints/drop links etc. so I have the full set for when the time comes to change things.

My 940 is a 1991 UK spec 945 (estate/wagon) with a B200F engine, RHD of course. Built in Belgium but designed in Sweden. I have owned itsince 1995 and covered around 300K miles, still on original clutch/engine/gearbox/axle, so a great car!!

Anyone who has done these inner bushes with or without a press please let me have your views on what is required. A hydraulic press would be a useful addition to my garage, so I wouldn't be buying it just for doing this job, but I want to get something which would be powerful enough without going too large!

    940 suspension bushes 900

    HiOwne Ian,

What year 940? Your 940 is left had drive as in N. America or right hand drive as in the UK?

Please read here from the Volvo 700-900 Series FAQ hosted here on the brickboard (copy and paste URL in new browser tab or window):

    https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/FrontSuspension.htm

Use the search feature to find article threads on 900 series replacement.

If you have a auto machine ship near you with proper presses and mandrels to pop the old out and pop the new in, should be easy and you need not a press. Many will acquire a press from Harbor Freight. Yet the proper mandrel sizes are a separate purchase and probably at a separate store.

You have the bushing at each end of the torque rod, and the control arm bushing secured to the engine support member. You will also have to press out the outer tie rod. Maybe a good time to replace the inner (under the bellows) and outer tie rod. You may want to grease the rack only as so much to grease the rack and some spare grease to lube the inner tie rod, yet no more than needed as air passes between the inner tie rod bellows as you turn the steering wheel.

Also, on this forum, you may find press recommendations as to how much force for the task if you need to.

I've not performed a full bushing replacement on a 700/900. So, I hope those that have reply to you soon.

    Hope that helps.

    Dud.

It looks like I may not be getting any advice from anyone having done this job, so would anyone care to give me a guess please?
Would a 10 tonne hydraulic press be enough for these bushes?

    Many thanks

    Owen F
