Heat shield for smog? (CA) 200 1988

Hi all,

I bought a 1988 245 in CA about 9 months ago. It had to have smog cert at the time in order to make the sale. I recently had some work done on it in a shop, and the shop gave me a heads up that I will need to get a pre-heat tube and heat shield to pass smog next year. They also said getting a new o2 sensor wouldn't be a bad idea. They also said they didn't know where to get the replacement part for the heat shield.

I am having a lot of trouble tracking down a heat shield myself, and I have little idea what I am looking for. Does anyone have any tips for getting a heat shield for a 1988 volvo 245 with the standard b230f?

I have also seen people say that the preheat tube is sometimes removed intentionally. Should I expect any problems with putting the pre-heat tube back on?

Thank you.

Do you have any salvage yards near you in Big Oak Flat, CA?

For some reason google image search delivers garbage results. I've posted on this topic someplace and included useful linked images. I'll try Microsoft Bing.

There exist two heat shields for LH-Jetronic equipped 240s.

The earlier style was a once piece sheet steel section with the preheater air hose connector at the center point down.

No images found. I cannot find my earlier post here (?) on the same topic responding to another CA-state resident in a SMOG inspection crisis.

The second version was a two piece heat shield. The top section secures to the four bolt holes in the manifold exterior. With the lower two bolt holes left loose so you slide the lower section with air hose nozzle up and secure the 12 or 12 mm hex head machine bolts.

Newer style for redblock from like 1988-19989 240, 740, and used on 940 normally aspirated (not Turbo).

The preheater air hose connects to the air hose nozzle on the preheater. However, this type air hose, as used on air-cooled VW, is a spiral wrap hose. That hose actually screws clockwise like normal thread onto the air filter box preheat air inlet under and and access obscured by the water pump fan shroud. You can drop the belly pan and route and connect that way with fan shroud disconnected or removal along with the water pump fan (so you do not risk bumping the radiator and bending the heat sink fins.

The reason why the preheater feature is disconnected, that no one ever mentions, seemingly, is that inside the air filter box, upstream of the air filter, is the cold air / preheated air flap valve. It always fails to hot. And all hot all the time means will cause the MAF / AMM to fail, eventually.

The preheater flap valve is controlled by a thermostat. After market is Borg-Warner Wahler PN 70411. I read replace every one to two years.

Else, as you are in SMOG crazy CA-state, where I resided in Novato and Chico, all state and federal mandated emission controls must appear to work during CA-state SMOG crazy inspection.

You can replace the Wahler PN 70411 thermostat with the heat shield and preheater air restoration.

Some will create an appearance of heat shield and preheater hose connection. Yet the air filter draws no preheated air. All ambient air intake. Saving your AMM / MAF.

If your environment as enduring severe winters, preserving the air intake preheater function is useful.

You may want to ask for the around 2" preheater hose sections that are I guess five feet long. Secure around the route with zip tie straps. As iPd sells it:

You Tube videos detail the Volvo 240 air box preheater flap valve, how it fails, and how to restore and remove it.

I found a junkyard Volvo not far from you that may have the parts you need:

PICK-n-PULL, Merced, California 95340

Vehicle search. Choose Volvo. Enter your Zip. Change the miles from 50 to 100. Yet Rancho Cordova south of Sac seems a distance.

Does that help you? Questions?

Thanks.

Hi,

You might want to look into the governing smog tests rules.
There is a age limit on smog requirements by arbitration, if need be.
One rule is, If the part can not be obtained through normal manufacturing supply routes, as in no longer offered it can be appealed to be dismissed.

If the car passes emissions during operation without a heat shield apparatus it becomes a mute issue.
The heat shield is only on there to bring more heat over to the air cleaner during the first start warming up period.
The valve in the filter box will close off that feature anyway!
The actually tailpipe test is the governing factor in closed loop operation.

It can also be an argument made that the excessive heat causes a failed thermostat in the air cleaner. This failure causes of the AMM to fail. This that affects the mixture to be improper of which are for worse for emissions for a time between certification test.

Volvo customer service departments have tons of documentation of the phenomenon.
It was a high money making gimmick for them.
During the hay days, the ticket back then was to block it permanently closed inside.
That is, if a smog technician was not lazy or excessively stupid to follow the book to the letter, you could find someone else that new it didn’t affect his license ultimately.

The machines always report the results to Sacramento! It doesn’t have any eyes, just the nose that counts!
So does common sense in reality!

Phil

Hi Bent,

Two pieces of sheet metal that bolt onto your exhaust manifold. Looks like this.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-240-Sedan-Exhaust-Manifold-Heat-Shield-90-91-92-93-Used-OEM/233264060467?hash=item364f9f1833:g:C40AAOSw5wVdC~R2

Most auto parts stores or online outfits can provide the flexible aluminum hose that connects the heat shield to your air box. It slips on and off easily so you can use it when the need arises.

regards,
Peter
