throttle position sensor 96 960 900 1996

My 1996 960 sets a trouble code for throttle position sensor. I replaced the throttle position sensor with a new Bosch unit and it still sets a code, but it is odd the way it sets it. If I clear the code it will reset after I start the car, but it takes about 10 seconds for the light to come on. If I don't clear the code and start the car, it still waits about 10 seconds for the light to come on. Any suggestions will be appreciated as the way it is currently it will not pass inspection.

Thanks,
Jimo

    Dear jimo,

Hope you're well. What codes are set? Have you cleaned the throttle position sensor's wiring harness connector with Deoxit or a similar corrosion-remover?

The time-delay before the problem recurs suggests that corrosion could cause higher-than-normal resistance in the wires that connect the sensor to the Engine Control Module (ECM). Resistance generates heat, which eventually breaks the circuit.

The problem could also be where the wiring harness connecte to the ECM.

Cleaning these contacts is a low-cost trouble-shooting step.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

      Spook,

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try cleaning the connector. I'm not sure what the code is but I will clean the connector tomorrow and check the code and give an update.

      Jimo

        Spook,

Well I went out to clean the contacts and to check the code and the check engine light is off and when I check for codes there are none.

To elaborate on when the code was set, I had disconnected the plug and sprayed it with electrical cleaner. I cleaned it just as maintenance as it was not showing a code until I cleaned it. So evidently I did not have the connections dry enough
so maybe that is why it set a code.

So now that it does not show a code-great I can get it inspected. But my final question is I have always thought that if it was started a few times and did not detect a problem that it would turn off the light but would it also clear the code? I hope that is the case, but for certain I will get it inspected soon.

        Thanks,

        Jimo

          Dear jimo,

Hope you're well. On a 940, to clear a code, it sometimes is needful to disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal, and then wait, say, 20 minutes before reconnecting. One should ascertain and/or write-down the radio's security code, before doing this.

I do not know if this procedure can/should be used on a 960. As to that, I'll defer to the Brickboard's 960 specialists.

          Hope this helps.

          Yours faithfully,

          Spook
