Air Filter Question 444-544

I plan on replacing my air filters on my PV for obvious reasons.

I've noticed several specialty vendors (VP etc) offer tall style cleanable filters with the usual blue shell, where the filter element is about twice the hight of the factory cleaner.

These are not cheap, at all (like $75 each!) - question is - do these make a difference in performance to justify $150.

Thanks,
Chris

Air Filter Question 444-544

If you want to make your own air filters, Fram CA77 & CA372 are about the right size. The CA372 is the thicker/taller type. There are several cross overs available in other brands if you don't want Fram. I used these in the past when I was manufacturing & selling air filter conversion kits for B18/B20 Volvos.

Air Filter Question 444-544

Thanks - I'll try the CA77 - I don't think the taller style will fit my early style hood. I'm assmuming it will fit in the blue lids currently on my SUs..

Air Filter Question 444-544

The taller (CA372) will interfere with the early style 544 hood supports. Also the diameter of these Fram filters are slightly larger than the stock Volvo filters. You'd have to fabricate new top & bottom covers to make them work.

Air Filter Question 444-544

Youch!

With our car's reputation for longevity and reliability, I cannot understand why anyone would not use Volvs's air filters!

Air Filter Question 444-544

More filter area does equal better performance potential and longevity.

The main advantage is you can clean and reuse these filters as opposed to the original disposable filters.

I personally don't like the "trapped cotton fiber" style filters like K&N and VP sells. I prefer a foam style air filters.

FYI, the taller air filters won't work on a 544/444 with the early style of hood and hinges used on the B16 equipped cars. The early right side hood hinge will hit the tall air filter on the front carb so a thinner filter has to be used.

Air Filter Question 444-544

Well, that narrows it down. My car was built in 1960 with a B16.

I don't see any foam options out there. I have found the Scandix paper style ($29), OEM Volvo paper units ($39), K&N ($117), and 'high performance' K&N type but with blue case from VP ($72)...

Any comments on any of these? I'm thinking either the cheapies or the VP ones...
