Ford 4G UPGRADE alternator for '92 240; Which wires where? 200 1992

My alternator died so after perusing Ebay for something cheap I decided on a Ford Taurus alternator that would give more amps. It's a 4G model that has a D-shaped three-wire plug/harness affair in addition to the B+ terminal and the Ground. Said wires are marked "A", "S" and "I" on the D-plug.

I assumed that the "I" wire should connect to the small red exciter wire and that "A" would go with B+ (Big Red).

I got the thing to fit (a bandsaw helps) and installed it and plugged the wires in and cranked the car. The battery light on the dash went out-- a good sign I thought, but my multimeter read a disappointing 12.8 volts between battery terminals that diminished as the car ran.

Does anyone know anything about these Ford alternators and offer advice about this installation? Have I screwed up the wiring? In the meantime I
l'll report back.

I'm open to suggestions of other alternators that put out 125 amps or more; I picked the Taurus model thinking they'd be plentiful and reasonably easy to adapt. Besides, it wasn't a GM.

Hi Volvo 15,

Definitely one of those "duh" moments. I did come across this diagram, which I recalled finding earlier while installing :

It's the "S" wire that I don't understand. Stator wire is supposed to go back to the stator on the 3G model. On my alternator there is no clip for that wire, leading me to assume that it can be ignored.

Presently as wired, "A" is attached to "B+" and "I" is attached to the red power warning light wire. I just want to confirm that this is correct.

I'm still trying to figure this thing out, and will get back when I do.

Thanks,

Tom

Update:

Partial success! The alternator alternated and the regulator regulated 13.59 volts, according to my most reliable multimeter.

The culprit was a dirty spade connector to the Battery light; simply squeezing the connector with my fingers closed the circuit and I could hear the engine change pitch as the alternator went on line.

Why only 13.5 volts? Tomorrow I'll do away with the spade connector and make a hard soldered junction, clean the wire harness and ground points. If that's not enough I'll yank the alternator and change out the regulator and brushes.

At least now I think I can drive it to the mechanic's shop in town.
Right now I can say I've got the wiring right.

Thanks,

Tom

Do you have the Ford wire plug for the alt ?, if you do just look at the wire diagram, they are color coded very easy swap, if you don't the plug you are SOL
