windshield, black gunk, mastic maybe, what brand? 200

I removed the windshield from my 86 240, with the intent to install it on my 1989 240.

‘look like it is held in place with only a bunch of tarry black gunk!

Where can I get more of this stuff?

    Hi mkoch,

If you can live without the chrome trim, I hope you realize that at this point you have the option of converting your 89 to the quieter and cleaner 91-93 style trim.

It's about the same time and money and maybe less aggravation in dealing with the shrunken beauty ring. Rather than the butyl and the snap kit, you'll need a length of generic 25 or 31mm rubber trim and a tube of urethane windshield adhesive.

I recently converted my 90 wagon and like it a lot.

    regards, Peter

I used the 31mm trim Peter alludes to -- but installed the windshield with Butyl. And good luck getting the trim off in one piece/undamaged. Not sure you can use the old trim with a new windshield anyhow.

Search for 3M 3/8" tape kit (08612 Window-Weld Ribbon). I picked one up at the local auto paint store -- have seen them in places like Autozone too.

Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his od d diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him ..(Oh, man, this is so bad, it's good)..... A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis. - ouch!

And available online as well. Good ol' "Butyl".....

Do yourself a favor -- do a good job cleaning up the old stuff.

You'll need spacers or shims, unsure what you call these, along the bottom edge so the windshield does not slide down over time.

I'll guess you'll have two sets of factory installed shims from two 240s. Reinstall in the same fashion, yet some 30+ years of service may have caused the material form whence these are fashioned to deteriorate. Butyl seals and adheres yet remains flexible and the windshield floats on the butyl tape gasket. So, in Summer, you may find the windshield slides downward with them shims along the bottom edge. Keep the drain holes clear.

Beautiful work you have there Art!
