Ac compressor clutch 940 900

Hey folks. 95 940 wagon, 190k miles. Ac is quitting when it’s really hot out. Clutch is reluctant to engage so thinking maybe a shim job is due, but looking at the front of the clutch, there are three metal discs on a triangle.... appears two have lost their caps and or whatever bushing might have surrounded the center pin of each circle. Does this mean new clutch this new compressor or is it possible a shim removal is still possible. Thanks.

Also got my mom’s 760 turbo wagon but that’s another story.

Ok, I think shimming will do the trick. I put zip ties behind the three stud/weight points. Now when the compressor is turned off (using the snowflake button) it drags ever so slightly. I recall it doing that years ago but hasn’t done it recently. Hit the snow button and it kicks on like it should. So one guessing on these hottest of dog days the gap had become too great and was causing the issue. If you don’t hear back, full testing confirms the fix.

Here’s a vid of the mechanic/craft wire approach on the same clutch face style in same fashion as my zip ties. Worked for this guy. Just wondering if I’ll need to remove them in winter.... but I’m guessing a little wear on the plastic the next few months will make that unnecessary.

Cheers!

Jimi

Last year I shimmed out my clutch w bread clips and it worked great until the shims ultimately fell out 8 months later.

One of the esteemed members of the brickboard suggested some metal shim material trimmed to size and using a proper adhesive for a better cure.

If you insert a stout screwdriver behind the clutch plate, you can make room for insertion of the shim, or as I did use bread clips.

Best of luck,

Marty

Thanks for the ideas, O. Creative juices flowing....

I’ve successfully done a zip-tie shim job on a V70, but the outer clutch cover is open in several spots making it possible. Not so much it seems on these older ones.

I second this. I did zip ties instead of bread clips. Works great. Super easy job.

What model did you zip tie? I did it on a v70, not sure it’ll work on older compressors.

Also worried about missing caps I mentioned .... are they weights for balancing?

Pic here w all intact. https://forums.tbforums.com/showthread.php?t=314134
