Does anyone know where to find Selector shaft seals? 200 1990

I have my AW-70 tranny out of my 1990 245 - so I wanted to reseal the selector shaft which is showing signs of leakage on one side but not as much on the other side.

I tried to find these seals at FCP, Rock Auto and IPD to no avail...

Would anyone have a suggestion for another source before I pay through the nose at the stealership?

Hi,

I bought some recently from eeuroparts. Their prices on some things are quite good, and their website is easy to use. Selector shaft seals were $0.55.

Or, you can type "1233064 volvo" into your favorite search engine. Stealership parts prices include some to reimburse the time spent by parts counter personnel bridging the gap between "the thingy that goes on my whatchamcallit" and the part number.

Dear Walter,

I hope you can help me here. The other day, I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn't driven more than a mile down the road when the engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband's help. When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbor girl.

I am 32, my husband is 34, and the neighbor girl is 22. We have been married for ten years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted that they had been having an affair for the past six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. He won't go to counseling and I'm afraid I can't get through to him anymore. Can you please help?

Sincerely,
Sheila

Dear Sheila:

A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburetor float chamber. I hope this helps.

Thanks so much Art - that worked! got some Volvo Parts Webstore with them and then found free shipping from someone on eBay.

Hopefully my frugality won't turn into a leaky seal!

I've got them in stock.

FYI, you shouldn't assume all the parts from the "stealership" are overpriced.

The seal you seek is only $4.72 directly from Volvo.

I make my living repairing old Volvos and even though I can get a lot of parts cheaper than Volvo, there are some things I still buy because Volvo's version is higher quality.

Don't get me wrong, I like to offer my customers the best price on parts I can. Sometimes, I can sell my customers the exact same part that Volvo offers but I got it from an aftermarket source. For example, I happen to be a bit nuts about using original tune up parts and Bosch made most of the parts for the old Volvos. 1 of the more commonly used original distributor caps from Volvo now costs almost $100.00, but I buy the same part from the aftermarket for a lot less. Still expensive but not $100.00.

Eric,

Nothing ever makes me regret not being a SoCal dweller, but there are times when I wish there were folks like you and your brother doing the business you do, and the way you do it, nearby to my kids and grandkids.

Had you responded to the OP first, I wouldn't have offered the part number. You're a treasure to this community.

As told by the late G. Downs III:

After years of hiding the fact that the love is gone, the last child moved out of the house and Mom and Dad announced they are getting a divorce.
The kids are distraught and hired a marriage counselor as a last resort at keeping the parents together.
The counselor works for hours, tries all of his methods, but the couple still won't even talk to each other.

Finally, the counselor goes over to a closet, brings out a beautiful upright Bass, and begins to play.

After a few moments, the couple starts talking.

They discover that they're not actually that far apart and decide to give their marriage another try.

The kids are amazed and ask the counselor how he managed to do it.

He replies, "I've never seen anyone who wouldn't talk during a bass solo."

And for that, the counselor gets $200/hr, and doesn't have to join the musicians' union....

Hello Art,

Please don't ever self censor.

I'm greatly appreciative of all your contributions and your willingness to share your knowledge. And I'm sure there are a whole lotta people who share my sentiments.

And in this case, I guarantee you I would technically lose money having to process his order for the seals he needs. But I don't mind, as that is part of being in business, customer service, whether the order is large or small.

Thanks for the benefits of your experience!!

Hi,

Try a local industrial bearing house that sell bearings and seals to everyone.

They have bearings and seal books that go by two diameters, various thicknesses and materials.
Measure up what you have after you remove the seal and take it with you. Even retail won’t be worse than dealerships.

You are only talking about a standard single lip oil seal that is in almost a static position as the shafts don’t move much radially.
On a manual transmissions, they move in both directions and that wears them out quicker.
Because the seal is wiping the shaft down like you would be using a rag.
On those, they should have a felt dust shield on the outside but no—ooo that will cost a few more pennies!

If you work with a knowledgeable bearing person, it that he knows his product lines and pages of cross references, you might be surprised how little they cost!

Phil
