sun visor swap 900 1994

The driver's side sun visor in this car failed. It would only stay in a horizontal position; it would spring back to this position when attempting to put it up or down.

The FAQ's

indicated that they were not interchangeable across all model years, but did not suggest what year the change came about.

I have a 1990 parts car that I pulled the sun visor from and it was the same design at the attachment point as the 1994. The 1990 did not have the vanity mirror, but we never used ours anyway. I cut the wires and taped them off.

As an educated guess I would say the 1990 through at least 1994 are interchangeable..

hi randy,

bad news, discontinued, both sides.

try this volvo used parts site, in sweden. i bought stuff that are hard-to-find parts. they are typically in good shape.

https://en.bildelsbasen.se/

sad to say, they are not interchangeable. why would volvo do that and they are expensive. some years ago, i replaced both of mine in my 94. not compatible with most 940's.

they are plastic-based and break, my new one broke and i said forget it, not paying that again.

rats. expensive too.

i'll give you volvo part numbers for my 94:
drivers: 9165735
passenger: 9165736

Dear rstarkie,

Hope you're well. As to sun visor interchange, the presence or absence of a sunroof seems to matter. The mounting "cans", through which pass the 8mm hex-head mounting screws, vary in height. Visors with tall "cans" (1/2" and 3/4") won't fit in a car without a sunroof. That requires "cans" that are 1/4" and 3/8" tall.

Apart from "can" height, the mounting format - two 8mm hex-head screws - is the same. The wiring connectors' format also is the same.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks for pointing out the visors are different for sunroof versus no sunroof cars. I misread the FAQ's and somehow thought it was model year dependent.

Funny, my driver side visor likewise recently failed in my sunroofed '95 940T wagon. Indeed, the difference in the mounting base is the presence/absence of a sunroof, otherwise they're the same design. They definitely don't seem repairable. Many, if not all of the 940s and probably all the 960s got the lighted cosmetic mirror on the driver side as well as the passenger side like the later GL/GLE 740s. Removing the A-pillar trim to get to the electrical connector for the lights strikes me as a pain fraught with danger of breaking a plastic clip, plus the mercury switches often fail, so I won't be seeking a fully working lighted visor with wiring harness from the yard when I soon go to replace it. In fact I don't even care if it's got a mirror as I can pretty much put my ChapStick on blindfolded. As long as I can get it to stay tipped forward then I can still see the traffic ahead and cut out the blinding evening sun trying to burn a hole in my retina.
