1980 Fuel Pump Relay 200 1980

Greetings All,
Does the Fuel Pump Relay control both fuel pumps independently?
My intank pump seems to be working when it wants to.
When I hear the main pump starting to get louder
I'll pull over and jumper the two pumps, but most
of the time the intank pump will not be turning on.
Then later on the same day I'll jump the pumps at
the fuse box again and then I'll hear the intank pump
working again. The intank pump seems to be hit or miss.

I pulled the intank pump out earlier this week to take
a look at it and it ran fine when I applied power to her.

This afternoon the main pump began to hum loud. I pulled
over and jumped the two pumps and the intank pump did not
respond. The main pump ran fine. 1/2 hour later when I
arrived home I re-jumpered the two pumps and both ran fine.

Could the fuel pump relay be my problem?

Thank you,
Joseph in HOT NEW MEXICO.

The relay runs them both together, not independently, but the tank pump has the #5 fuse in the path to boot. Spin fuse 5 before getting In The Tank.

Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.

Hi Art - I hope all is well.

In this 1980 k-jet I installed the inline fuel pump for the k-jet. But the new inline pump is humming louder than I feel comfortable with. It sounds like it is spraying fluid. I was thinking that I should upgrade the in-tank pump to the bigger one available (as an upgrade) from IPD?

Thanks again for the knowledge sharing.

Joseph...

Have you verified the fuel hasn't eaten up the hose inside the tank?

Personally speaking, I give IPD's "upgrade" a thumbs down because no upgrade is needed. And, it requires modifications. If the Walbro is a more reliable pump, then it is an "upgrade." On the up side, it will make you feel good about the money you spent if you managed to get it installed successfully, regardless of the real reason for buying it. Then you'll join the many who would argue with me.

The issue is finding a reliable tank pump, a good piece of submersible hose, and a sender assembly not damaged by corrosion.

Good luck with your classic!

Hi Art,
The in-tank hose is new, last week I replaced the hose that was in there,
it was pretty bad, but not eaten through. I also confirmed that the in-tank pump is spinning in the correct direction. I've read in other forums
that the hum from the inline pump is somewhat normal?

Thanks,
Joseph

Hi Joseph,

Sorry, my fault. I missed that you had pulled the tank pump already. If the pump runs intermittently, it could be it has short brushes.

One useful comment I can make is to note there's a difference between a hum and a buzz. Hum is a clean vibration, like when your phone vibrates in your pocket. Buzz is what it sounds like when it goes off on a dinner plate. Also, if you kept the original Bosch pump in your replacement, with the rubber mount of the tray, it might sound different from another brand (Airtex for example uses a different drive mechanism).

If you're unsure, disconnect the feed pump on a hot day with a low tank, or clamp shut the inlet hose, and hear what cavitation sounds like.

Another way to be sure your tank pump is working:

fwiw. the Accumulator at times buzzes. It's the device next to the fuel pump.

On my 80 it makes the most noise in the winter --- but then cold is not your problem.
