Hi,
I had the same issue on my newly acquired 1993 two years ago.
They use a double stick tape.
I put mine back on using 3M “red backed peel” mounting tape that you see in the hardware store.
The hardware stores have some green backed scotch pattern. You don’t want that!
The foam is for interior uses and is different.
There is the same 1/2” stuff, that’s is “red backed peel” in the “chain” auto parts stores for about 30% more because it’s made narrow for more applications but you get a lot less footage for the money!
You can get it in “one inch wide” in the hardware stores and cut it down the middle, therefore doubling down on savings.
You can get different holding powers but the lightest is plenty!
The holding power is still way up there for this plastic panel.
Cutting it narrow won’t make a difference, unless if you think you need “Automotive”? I see no difference other than the packaging, I’ll get you look!
I used it twice as wide or thick in some places to take up some space that I thought might keep it from touching the door like it should on the ends. The molding has reliefs in the corners
.
I too wondered, why after thirty years it gave up! (:)
This was the first of any my cars to have the trim come loose.
It was in Arizona and Reno,Nevada, it’s whole life, so maybe it dried out from the lack of humidity or too much heat? Change of suppliers can do it too!
First year and last year models suffer fates all of their own!
The Volvo tape just lost its sticky!
She had put black electrical tape on one side and believe it or not, it held for a lot longer than I imagined it would!
She had replacements for only just the front or the rear doors, I don’t recall now.
Volvo discontinued carrying them during her order.
She paid about $60 each for those she got.
I still have them in their cardboard box.
The old ones right back on except for someone put a tiny screw in the front of the left front one. I treated the metal hole and let it go.
You have to look for it and be on your knees! That so, doesn’t happen anymore! (:)
When you go do the job make sure you have it where you want and don’t press it at all until you got there.
I tried leaving as much of the peel tape on the sticky but the panel fits so close it’s hard to pull it sideways from under it.
Fit the panel from end to end equally and if you can have some align the bottom just in from the bottom edge a tiny bit before you tilt! Cause, When it touches down, its on there!
The person on the bottom pushes the center in lightly and go outwards.
I went the whole length like they did.
I bet they used some sort of an alignment “clip-on limiter” to set the panel or if do it enough times, like an assemblers job, you can sleep your way through it!
I suggest this, if you are on the floor and most people are!
I did the first one-side on my car lift and the other side on the floor at my other house. It harder if you are not seeing the bottom edge and not being able to use your chin!
It’s a comfort to mind and body to see it all at once!
Enjoy!
Phil
