When was the last time you checked your oil cooler hoses ? 900

The are "out of sight, out of mind" items, especially if you don't change your own oil. Because of the environment they live in and the oil soaking they experience they are more prone to failure than the heater hoses. A failure of one of those hoses can lead to overheating if you don't have a low coolant sensor circuit (or fail to see the alert if you do).

Overheating can of course lead to head gasket failure and those are no fun to repair- especially on a turbo engine.

The part numbers for those two hoses are 9161383 and 9161384.

At every oil change, I make sure they're wiped clean of oil and grunge after I'm done and check that the rubber hoses don't at all look gummy, soft or puckered. Still going strong on my original hoses, but having said that they will now likely fail in the next month, so damn you for even raising the topic, LOL!

hi randy,
i don't have a turbo, and i refer to my 86 245, i use steel-braided oil cooler lines with aeroquip fittings.

i installed a volvo oil cooler on my 86 about 15 years ago that includes a volvo t-stat sandwich plate.

solved the issue with rubber-only hoses.

The coolant hoses for the oil cooler are inspected every oil change at my house. I replace them every few years, when I see the ends start to swell from oil.

I've seen many 740s and 940s in the self serve wrecking yards which have been overheated. Heater valves and those oil cooler hoses (used on 1992+ turbo cars) are the usual causes.

most don't even know they are there until one lets go along with all your coolant within a half a mile after which your head gasket blows up. i have bought 2 turbos with blown HG's for just that reason, and the heads were so badly warped no longer usable.


the typical quickie oil change people have no idea these ought to be checked when they install a filter even though they stare right at them.

Dear trichard,

Hope you're well. The hoses - for which I quoted prices - are oil cooler hoses.

The heater hoses - parts #3507412 and #3507413 - are about $38 each at a US-based Volvo dealer.

I'd not use anything other than Volvo brand heater hoses, for the reason you state: these hoses are hard to access. Even if they were easily accessible, hoses fail from the inside, so looking at them would not help to assess their strength.

I think 15 years is a reasonable service life, for Volvo heater hoses, if the car "lives" where ambient temperatures don't exceed 90⁰F for more than three months in a year. For those in the tropics, I'd err on the side of caution, and replace after 10 years.

Hope you're well. These hoses are "small money" - $14 and $20, respectively, from a US-based Volvo dealer.
