brake bleeder valve 900

Anyone have any idea what size the brake bleeder
valve is on the 93 940's. Was bleeding the brakes
and looks like one of the bleeders valves not
closing properly, sucking air and fluid back into the
system when shutdown. Girling /ATE brakes.

Hello Dom,

Brake bleeder repair kits are available like these

https://www.ebay.com/itm/CTA-1230-Brake-Bleeder-Screw-Repair-Kit-1-4-5-16-7-8mm/273176908355?epid=1042396579&hash=item3f9a9cd243:g:XQoAAOSwUF9a32SY

if you're willing to drill and tap. I've used them and they work well.

If your Giring/ Ate are the same as is used on the 240, Napa sells bleeder screws for about $3 but they may not be in all stores. Front are part #27864 and rear are #23928. If you run those numbers through their web page, you can find out if there's stock near you.

If I recall, the little front Girling bleeders are 1/4-28 thread and the rear Ate's are metric 7 x 1.0. Old stock of both are often available on EBay at very reasonable prices.

It's possible to draw air in if the valve is not sealing, but I think you'd also have a puddle of brake fluid under the car after being idle. Perhaps the vacuum force is greater than the static pressure of the fluid.

Good luck,
Peter

Hey Peter, thanks for additional info. Those #'s you gave me not for the
940 brakes. NAPA has the bleeders for the rear ATE brakes, of which I need.
They also have bleeders for front ATE bricks, which I don't have. They
do not reference the Girling brakes. Will pickup the bleeders this week.
Will check to see if the bleeders for the ATE's will also work with the
Girlings. Hope so. I had so much better luck finding parts for my 240 than this 940. Overall though, the 940 is a far more enjoyable car, just not the head turner that the 240 was. Appreciate the help. Dominic

Dear Dom's940,

Hope you're well. The Brake Bleeder Screw - found on each caliper - is Volvo Part #3266309. At a U.S. Volvo dealer, this part is about $9. It does not seem that after-market parts suppliers, e.g., www.fcpgroton, still supply this part.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Dear Dom's940,

Hope you're well. You're welcome. I didn't get into dimensions, as I know of no variant or substitute for this part. While various firms may make this part, if it is to work, it has to be made so it fits the specific caliper.

I recall a post wherein it was reported that a caliper bleeder screw of the wrong length had been used on a re-conditioned unit. The too-short screw - despite having the required diameter and thread pitch - did not seal, even when "fully closed".

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

"I recall a post wherein it was reported that a caliper bleeder screw of the wrong length had been used on a re-conditioned unit. The too-short screw - despite having the required diameter and thread pitch - did not seal, even when "fully closed". "

That has been a problem for me, too. Very few 240s, or 940s for that matter, still roll around the rust belt with their original brake calipers. The re-manufacturers use varying methods of restoring the bleeder valve function, especially when the cores they get have them snapped off. I've seen the valve seats ground with obviously chattering tools, and the threads re-cut way too much to hold the bleeder screws they install.

The competition is strong and the profit margin thin for re-conditioned brake calipers from the 90's.

If the calipers are still original and serviceable, it makes sense to replace the screw with a part from Volvo. This probably happens on the West Coast.
