544 Differential oil 444-544

I'm using Pennzoil Platinum GL-4 75W-90 gear/axle oil in my M40 and it loves it. Can I/should I use the same in the differential?

Thanks!

No, you need GL-5 Hypoid oil for the diff.

Some people say the diff needs GL-4 hypoid. Can anyone else chime in?

GL-5 is a higher grade of diff oil, like DOT 4 brake fluid is a higher grade than DOT 3.

GL-5 has more additives and can be used in your diff if you want.

However, GL-5 in not recommended in your transmission. I have read that there now maybe some versions of GL-5 that are safe for "yellow metals", ie, copper based parts like synchro cones, and that it should say so on the label.

FYI, Volvo originally recommended SAE 90 for both the diff and transmission. I use GL-1 which is the same as SAE 90 AFAIK in my customers M40 and GL-5 for their differential oil.

I get my GL-1 from NAPA.
