No bottom row ignition lights on start up 900 1992

I have a Volvo 940 1992, the problem is the ignition lights do not come on. When I insert the key and turn it to position II nothing but the seat belt warning light and overdrive arrow light come on. Car starts and runs fine. Also upper part of the instrument panel has lights. All the gauges, dimmer, clock, etc...all are fine. Did some reading. People had issues with bad ground connections. Which ones?
I'd like some hints before I remove the dash and go hog wild.
Thanks in advance!

    Hi Tim,

The best place to find ground locations used to be at

    http://volvowiringdiagrams.com/volvo/240%20Wiring%20Diagrams/TP32352-1%201993%20240%20Wiring%20Diagrams.pdf

but I can't access it anymore. Does anyone know what's up with that ?

You can check your grounds from the connections behind your gauge cluster.

If you've never had it out you can learn how at Art Benstein's site.

    http://cleanflametrap.com/dash.html

This is an entire dash removal, but the 5th picture shows how to access the 2 screws on the right side of the box, and then scroll down until you see a clock for the rest of the story. It's not hard to do.

Let us know when it's out and we'll suggest some things to check.

    Is your speedometer working ?

    Peter

No, my speedometer is not working. It quit long time ago, but all along my bottom dash lights worked fine. I think my speedometer sending unit (on differential) is bad. Need to replace it.

        Dear Tim,

Hope you're well. Speedometer failures on 1991-2 models usually are caused by failed capacitors. Leaks of capacitors' electrolyte damage the circuit board. This damage may not be obvious. Art Benstein is deeply knowledgeable in this realm (and many others).

A second cause of speedometer failure is corrosion of the wires that take the in-dfferential sensor's signal to the instrument cluster. The wires are exposed to the elements, just at the point where the wires enter the wiring harness connector's housing. Signal sensor wiring failure - if so it is - will be obvious.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

Need to dismantle instrument panel out and look at group of connectors behind it. The connectors are labelled A to E and L.

When all gauges are ok means power and ground are good which comes thru D connector (4 wires) along with speedo input from differential. The lower group of lights are also powered thru D connector but grounded individually according to its purpose thru B and C connectors. So check B and C connectors for looseness/corrosion etc.

If B and C connectors are ok but still no light then you have to check those solder points on the flexible circuit board itself. Location of these points are not shown in circuit diagram. Need to do visual inspection and reflow where necessary. Extra precaution when reflowing those points. Just touch them with soldering iron not more than 1 second to avoid melting the surrounding flexible board.

    Hope these help,
    Amarin.

Get one of these. Very handy. Lots of 'em on eBay

How will this help? This is digital voltmeter that runs off of cigarette lighter port.

Can you be a bit more specific? Which ground connectors pertain to dash board ?

Although there's probably a few reasons why those indicator lights may not be energized, having first hand knowledge of what the alternator is doing is essential w these old cars and may help w diagnosis.

Otoh, a search on the BB will yield the diagnostic tools to determine whether your prob is w the alternator or the cluster. My bet is w the cluster

Good luck. It all makes sense when it's fixed. Plus w that voltmeter you get the two bonus USB ports.

        Marty
