Seeking advice on AC Compressor 900 1994

Original issue here: https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1656374&show_all=1

I am planning replacing the compressor due to apparent failure, likely the clutch. My Volvo guy will evacuate the system and I will remove and replace the compressor. The main concern now is sourcing the replacement.

The compressor is obviously not the original or the same model that came with the car. PO probably put in a cheaper model, maybe 20 years ago. My other 940 has a Volvo compressor, possibly original. The failing unit is about 1.5 inches longer and has vertical tube connections whereas the Volvo unit has ports in a "V" shape. The AC tubing around the compressor has obviously been altered.

I'm hoping to identify the unit once it is out and find a replacement. Rock auto has a good selection and a couple look to be the same.

Any input on my strategy here would be welcome and once I get it out, maybe help finding a replacement

Thanks to all. I hope we can find a solution to Jarrod's problem

Seeking advice on AC Compressor 900 1994

    hi joe,
here's one post i wrote in 2016 on these compressor. i installed the sanden 4434 (sd7h15hd) with the sanden port fitting, 4866-6340.

    https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1636923/220/240/260/280/need_93_240_replacement_ac_compressor_advice_sanden_documents.html

these are great compressors and better than some of the others, i believe.

if my 94 ac compressor goes, i'm going for the sanden, if i confirm that the high and low pressure hoses are angled enough to fit.

on my 86 245, i had to bend one of the hoses to make it slide into the compressor, but no problems from it.

forgot to add...get the USA-made compressor, not chinese.

    regards,
    byron golden

Seeking advice on AC Compressor 900 1994

    Dear Mr Pelchat,

The original Volvo unit (in the other car) with "V-shaped" port arrangement could likely be a Sanden or Seiko-Seiki compressor. Seiko-Seiki is hard to source these days - most are refurbished item. Sanden models such as SD 709 or SD 7H15 is recommended for the car. But these are old model numbers. There could be updated model numbers (still same compressor) on Rock Auto.

Your current compressor with vertical upright pipe arrangement is most likely a Zexel compressor. Originally labelled as Diesel-Kiki (a Bosch subsidiary company) which has been transformed over the years into Zexel, Seltec, Tama and Valeo. All these offers same upright pipe configurations for our 940 series. Recommended model numbers are DKS-15BH or DKS-15CH (for Diesel-Kiki/Zexel), TM15 or TM16 (for Seltec, Tama and Valeo).

The DKS-15BH and TM16 have larger cubic displacement which translates into better cooling at idle. If you do most highway driving then any model could do.

All of these are "ear-mounted" compressors. The compressors listed above have about same mounting dimensions into their brackets - drop in replacement. Regarding pipe connections its better to order same compressor length as you're having now as to avoid those pipes hitting the alternator above. So its recommended to order the Zexel/Tama/Seltec/Valeo variety rather than follow the model in your other car.

Although you could try to avoid the alternator by alter/bend-ing those pipes a bit during installation and setting it to exit at different angle when tightening the ports, its still a risky move. Done improperly port mating surfaces could misalign/deform and leaks.

I do not wish to add more to your concern but when a compressor fails in our CCOT system, the condenser is affected too. Consider having its internal piping thoroughly cleaned or opt for replacement. And the orifice tube too. Otherwise cooling performance might still be unsatisfactory.

    Amarin.

Thanks for the explanation, Amarin. I intend to replace with as close as possible to the existing. Rock auto advertises a DKS-15BH that might work. When I get it out I'll know more. Until this situation worsened, AC was good with annual recharge
