92 Volvo 245 Steering shudder at slow speed, near full turn ?

Not sure what I have here, adjusted loose power steering belt. Nothing obvious wrong with suspension or steering components.

It does have a pretty squishy looking trans mount, right motor mount a recent (few months) replacement and, left one looks intact.

Steering rack and tie rods have no play.

Thanks
Dan

Sent the car home with my daughter after replacing with Mobil 1 ATF using the turkey baster. I used a quart of dexron for the initial flush then the Mobil1.
At times it seemed to have improved but time will tell. Hopefully there is still some air left in the system which will eventually purge.

I am turkey baster replacing the existing ATF fluid with new Dextron fluid prior to changing to Mobil 1 ATF.

I have noticed a vibration when touching the pump, it is a considerably stronger vibration in the problematic 92 than in my good running 93. So I may be onto something, the 93 vibrates but is much less.

I can probably do 3 or 4 ATF changes of the PS reservoir. How long should I drive it between changes or can I just cycle from lock to lock to bleed the system.

Old fluid is darker red but very clear, I have placed a hard drive magnet in the reservoir and so far not seeing and metal deposits.

If the vibration continues strong I will swap out the pump.

Changing to Mobil 1 synthetic could possibly cure this. Worth a shot anyway.

Don't know of any hard, fast rule here. Goal is to fully circulate the fluid to expedite removing the old fluid. Every time you empty and replace the fluid in the reservoir the closer you are getting to 100% new fluid. When I did it on my 850 I would drive for a few days and do it again. Repeated 2 or 3 times. Seemed pretty clean after that. Sounds like you might have a time constraint so maybe just lock to lock? Whatever works for you. Me, I'm sold on Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in the PS system and tranny. Did the conversion in my 95 850 and wish I had done it on my 90 240 (had to replace rack in that car). Saved me an 850 rack replacement! When I sold the 850 at 250K+ it had its original tranny, rack and PS pump.

I have the car for at least another week or two, then my daughter will want it back.

I'll do the the ATF swaps with a small amount of driving and take more time in between Mobil 1 change over.

Looks like the pump swap could be messy so I will avoid it if the vibration subsides.

        Thanks
        Dan

Any other opinions on excess vibration of the pump is appreciated.

New accessory belts and have made several adjustments, shudder is less but not gone away.

Harmonic balancer is fine it has been well marked and not slipping or wobbling.

I'm not sure another pump will solve anything as I have seen that shuddering is not due to the pump or rack?

One thing I saw was it's caused by engine RPM input and fluctuations of engine speed. This is one of the reasons for the harmonic balancer and special high pressure hoses to reduce or eliminate engine induced pulsing. Anyone know of special hoses? I know some 240s have a metal ring around the hose to help reduce pulsing.

Before swapping the pump I may try a turkey baster fluid change using Mobil 1 ATF.

Any comments and ideas are appreciated.

    Thanks
    Dan

      Hi Dan,

About that hunk of heavy on the high pressure hose. I think it is there to make the hose work quietly and last longer. I had no idea anyone thought it was there to reduce pulsation in the hydraulic assist. Good thought?

It clamps on with a SS hose clamp IIRC. Yes, item 37-37-37.

I don't know, but the one I saw is more like a donut cut in half and screwed together in the middle of the hP hose.

Maybe the old fluid is contaminated. If so, consider doing a full flush or do the turkey baster removal/refill multiple times until the fluid is really clean.

Long shot - maybe steering limiter is broken or totally worn out so wheel/tire is rubbing.

I agree. I too would siphon out the old PS fluid and replace with synthetic. Nothing to lose... I did exactly that with my former 95 855 and it killed a slow rack seal leak. However, do suggest making sure the Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is compatible with a 240's pump and rack before the switch.

I'm a little fuzzy on this so don't hold me to it, but I think the ring you mentioned or maybe it is attachable weighted tape? might come from the factory. Maybe it's missing now? You might want to research this further. Perhaps someone will chime in on this.

Doubt this is the issue, but may be worthwhile checking the steering shaft u-joints to make sure they are not seizing up. That typically causes stiff, unpredictable steering that sometimes doesn't return to center. Don't remember any shuddering when I had that issue with my 240 and 850.

      Good luck!
      Jim

I had an issue with a 91 steering shaft so I am familiar with the non centering symptom, I have not seen that in the 92.

Brief search found some references to 700 and 900 series synthetic compatibility but so far no 240 mentions.

We have a wide spot in the driveway where a three-point turn puts the car back in an exit stance, so we are doing this lock to lock steering on a daily basis. I noticed something a couple months ago on our '89 daily driver which your description reminded me of.

Looking to find the PS belt loose first, I gave it a tweek, but the steering still felt like the belt was slipping. I did the same for the A/C belt, and the trouble disappeared. Very, very rarely have I ever needed to adjust or replace a 240's A/C belt. No oil seen.

I readjusted the PS belt and it still has not fixed the shudder. Is it possible air is leaking into the system causing the problem?

PS pump and rack are not leaking much, I don't believe fluid has been added and the reservoir is full.

Do the pumps go bad that would cause this? I don't recall seeing anything on the BB failed PS pumps.

I drove small circles in both directions in an effort to bleed the system but it has not made a difference.

      Thank
      Dan

        Hi Dan,

I can't answer your question from experience. Guess I was lucky fixing mine.

Besides some problem with the pump when it is working hardest, I can only be reminded of the troubles that can occur with belt driven accessories. For instance, the rubber ring in the vibration damper can slip. Or, as I've had happen, a glazed belt with just a bit of oil mist can slip silently -- but that was the alternator pair.

I've swapped pumps before to determine if trouble was in the rack -- it is a lot easier than swapping the rack, if you have a yard part and don't have to fit a pulley.

I can tell you that the PS belt in my 93 is loose as a goose and it works fine. The problem car has the belt pretty tight but the shudder continues, I could try a new belt.

I do have a spare PS pump as well as a rack so I may start with the pump. Any tricks to removing the hoses from the pump? I'd rather not deal withe the rack end of the hoses right now.

          Thanks
          Dan

Before removing the PS hoses you might check the PS belt to see if it is glazed. That could possibly cause a shudder.

I'l try that and replace it if glazed. What is the fluid capacity of the pump and rack?

All belts are cracked and glazed, the PS pump turns smooth and freely. Sure hope a belt fixes it, I will install all 4 at the same time.

Thanks Art, so the belt adjustments made the shudder go away? I had hoped that would have been what happened to me.

I did adjust both the A/c and PS belts. I actually did the A/C belt first then loosened the PS belt as it seemed to have tightened once the A/C belt was adjusted. I will try to adjust the PS belt again as I may loosened it up too much. It would be fine with me if the belt adjustment would solve the problem.

This is my daughters car that I finally got home for awhile to give it a once over. She hadn't noticed the shudder!

Did someone move the steering while the wheels were off the ground with the engine off?

For some stupid reason this induces air into the hydraulic system and will eventually bled out.

Not before I discovered it. I first noticed this while backing up but it does occur going forward at near full turn either side.

The front is up on jack stands so I can go lock to lock several times to try to bleed the system.

Seems like the rack may be worn allowing even travel?
      Thanks
