1993 wagon Timing belt tensioner 900

Hi all,
Still working on the 940 wagon. The timing belt tensioner sounds gritty so I'm trying to replace the roller. Are there any tips on getting this whole assembly out to replace the roller have one heck of a time.
Thanks, as always.
Joel

    A few links:

1993 uses the round tooth timing belt that goes for 100k. The INA brand tensioner lasts for 100k miles also.

Usually I'll set the tensioner nut loose, press on the timing belt long run to press the tension back and while doing so tighten the tension nut. Remove the belt. Cover the tensioner in hand and set it loose.

There is a hole through the tension spring guide. I use a scratch awl or like tool to secure the tensioner in place after compressing the spring so you can slip the tbelt on.

ContiTech sells a kit with the round tooth belt and the INA brand tensioner. Continental is OEM as are the INA brand tensioners, so far as I know.

Unless Spook can provide us with illuminating guidance for your concern.

I think this is a question I answered as a double post last week. I think the OP is mistakenly thinking the "roller" comes off the bracket, which of course, it doesn't as it comes as an assembly. - Dave

        Dear Volvo From Heck,

Hope you're well. You are, of course, correct as to the timing belt tensioner roller not being separable from the mounting. As the roller is the "high-value" item, re-using the mounting is not cost-effective.

The belt might last 100,000 miles, if that distance were covered in, say 10 years. But I'm not sure I trust an older belt, albeit with half the miles. Rubber deteriorates with heat and time, so I plan to change a 10-year-old belt. I'll probably change the tensioner as well, out of an abundance of caution.

Am I over-cautious? Has anyone used a post-1992 timing belt for more than 10 years? What's the "Brickboard" record for a tensioner's working life?

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
